This was just cut instead of rewritten, but 2.0 at one point had a much more NGE-like motif of Angels taking and using the Childrens' faces to confront them. There are still artifacts of it in the final product like Zeruel taking Rei's form, her face bubbling out of its core, Shinji's face tearing away when he comes to get her, but the scenes to create context for them didn't get in.
