For Japan a trap is basically just an archetype at this point. Just like the other girl archetypes. They include a trap in stories occasionally, in the same way they include any other archetype. Its become a trope for them, and it does have a fanbase just like any other archetype. But other countries don't have this archetype yet, so they find it strange.

The trap is also the clothes; if the trap isn't wearing the right clothes then they won't often be seen as a trap. In order to be a trap they have to dress the part, have to play the part. Its mental and physical niche, like a glasses girl who you sometimes see without glasses.

With anything out of japan what its important to remember is that everything that isn't very normal is very repressed in real life, its better to just not be "rude and unusua.l" That is exactly why you see the extreme ends of escapism in all their fictional media and subcultures related to it as its the only place it can blossom.

In Sweden you have practically the opposite situation. Culture can basically force people to be accepting and what ends up happening is if you take a political survey of peoples actual inherent views they are more polarized and you find alot of conservative (boring) types rather then people who would feel the need to draw up traps, monster girls, crazy mecha animes and jojo etc.
