I watched Deen F/SN first and the UBW movie, then F/Z, then i read parts of the F/SN VN, and then I watched Illya series, F/GO movie and now F/A.

Arguing about where to start is retarded. Reading VNs is not for everyone and the F/SN VN is pretty shit even if it has some good moments.

I am someone who has played the VN. I didn't enjoy it. Didn't like it at all. But, because I read it, I know certain arbitrary bits of information unavailable to those who haven't read the VN. Does that mean that, for everyone interested in any Fate work, it is worth reading the VN? No. If someone is serious enough in their interest, or perhaps simply wants to know every detail about the Fate world, then reading the VN may be worth their while.

Either way, reading the visual novel should not be considered by the TM fan community to be an absolutely necessary prerequisite facet for/of experiencing any text in the franchise. The way prose is written and how its nuances are perceived is different, and often riders on things that are more on the cultural side than the language side of things.

DEEN and Extra got me into the series. Well, not so much DEEN, that actually turned me away from the series and I pirated Extra on a whim.I'd watched Zero and the UBW DEEN movie before starting the VN. I'd even played Unlimited Codes before touching any of the VN, so I knew about Sakura too. Their wasn't anything left to surprise me in the VN. Didn't matter though because the series is strong enough to not need to rely on it's twists.

Starting with Extra gave me a weird love for Nero though. Arturia cant compare.

FSN would be a lot better if it was written by literally anyone other than Nasu. He's just not a particularly good writer.
