I liked their Toriko translation. NS was fitting there.

You really kinda can't win with translated manga- and it's not the Japanese that's the problem. Even the professional translators for half this shit fuck up, or at best give these insanely literal and overly dry translations that don't convey character at all.

The official stuff is this rote, dry, literally translated shit who are obsessed with "localization" without actually doing any localization. Official translations also will drop open mentions of other copyrighted material that wasn't explicitly licensed, english swears, etc. (If you want to see the full-blown AIDS version of obsession with dry-as-shit "localization" go watch Otaking's insufferable fansub documentary where he somehow comes off more pretentious than the shitty fansubbers he's rightfully trashing)

And the scanlators, since it's a big group of random self-taught people mangle things with bad cleaning/redraws, and trying way way too hard on interpreting dialogue tone/style. You get stuff like Niggastream. Also they don't have as many people proofreading or people who know shit to prevent basic errors. A timely example: In Dr. Stone, Senkuu is talking about creating Sulfa drugs. They're in-fact, called Sulfa drugs, but because how it's romanized (sul-fa) the scanlators thought this was meant to be "Sulfur Drugs" which is wrong. Not a big error, but a good example on how professional proofreading is important and one of the things pros get right generally.

So basically you have to take it all with a big grain of salt, and read everything to really get the proper context.

the grammar is pretty easy since Japanese generally never violates its own rules. There are two irregular verbs in the entire language.

The problem is reading it- it may not be a problem in the future at some point since even the Japanese are using less and less Kanji but you need to know a few hundred to read even at a grade-school level. Also regular vocabulary is important of course.

I took 4 years of it in high school and was able to read/speak at basically a grade-school level at the end but I never really worked on it and now all the vocabulary/kanji are gone. I remember the grammar and hiragana/katakana and like 40 kanji and that's about it.

Yes, if you just learn the language, you're good. You might as well replace Kanji with Vocabulary because that's what you're doing. Pretty much any language you can learn a bunch of vocabulary words and basic grammar and be able to read as well as a second grader. The difference with Japanese is literally every Kanji is a homonym and has anywhere from 3-10 different meanings and readings depending on what other Kanji it's paired with. The idea that you can just learn Kanji is fucking retarded. You're much better learning the kana for vocabulary and then attaching the Kanji later after you have a vocabulary pool of 500+.

That's because those guides on /djt/ assume that your goal is to be able to read VN's or manga. If you actually want to learn Japanese they're really lacking.

If that's all you want then just follow those guides. If you want to be able to hold a conversation then I recommend getting one of the many teaching books like Genki or Mina no Nihongo and completing at least volume 1 of them. After that, start learning vocabulary/Kanji based on the JLPT levels. Anki has good decks and there are a bunch of apps to help with Kanji. Start reading at this point. NHK News Web Easy is good, but any manga with furigana also works. Install rikaikun. Don't fall for the VN meme. Find the Japanese pimsleur and go through every lesson. At some point you'll be confident enough to actually try and form your own sentences which is when you should get one of the apps that lets you talk to other Japanese people like HelloTalk or whatever. Once you have a base of Japanese and can read most things without much help other than looking up a word here or there the only way you'll improve is by talking in Japanese.

Memorise Hiragana and Katakana, there's tons of shitty apps to use for this. (just look at the most popular ones on your phone of choice and work through them)
Then comes Grammar and reading, I recommend blazing through "Sakubi: Yesterday's Grammar Guide" which is from some DJT guy who felt he could explain some things better than Tae Kim/Genki (two other good starting options) and starting with the Yotsubato! Reading Pack or other media you're interested in enough to learn on the go.
