The worst part about it is that you really rarely see people calling it deep while praising it. But every time someone tries to critiicize it they go for the muh deep, and lol so random cards. It just gives the impression that they didn't understand the show at all. Tatami galaxy also seem to get this treatment a lot.

It was an art project that was done to experiment and stop the Gainax team from killing themselves after EoE. The VA's were purposely obscure and the action within the show was at a level that would later be used for Gurren Lagaan and KLK. It's basically a 6 episode AMV. It's a "fun" show that doesn't have all the stupidity the "fun" anime normally have.

It is indeed deep as in "has a lot of layers of meaning". I don't recall any other shows that can be watched 20 times and every watch is different. It is questionable whether making show like that is a good idea, but what is unquestionable is that it is hard to do, virtually unprecedented and that the result is extremely entertaining for me. It has great and interesting animation, the ost is great. It's a nice comming of age story that uses aliens, robots and men in black to present how chatic and confusing puberty can be. It's short so every scene has meaning and isn't bloated. The character's are well designed, funny, relatable and well voiced. Some of the dialogue is pretty good.

Nonsense. All are dripping with character. They start out a bit subdued though because a lot of the VAs were actually theater actors who hadn't done anime before. By the time it hits ep 5 its full-on cartoon voices though and its gold

I agree that it's very layered. When I said it's not deep I meant that it's pretty obvious what it's trying to say and that the message is something that should be familiar to everyone. It's not obscure nor does it requires a large ammount of knoweledge to get into. Sure you will miss some gags here and there, but the important bits are pretty universal.
