No
>>
>>159958160
and how the fuck does left have more meaning than right?
>>
>>159958304
it gives you an understanding of the context in a show that is supremely esoteric in its japaneseness, rather than diminishing its flavor in a loose poor translation
>>
>>159958304
It helps you learn moonrunes
>>
>>159958160
You genuinely don't know what the term localization means, but that's not really surprising. You've never learned another language or worked in translation, you're just here for the memes
>>
>>159957579
The left one is definitely better because it provides more information.
>>
>>159958181
It literally is not a localization
>>
ITT: people who post on /a/ have small vocabularies and the only mean word they know to make fun of subtitles is "localization."
>>
>>159958498
Sure, rewrite is more accurate.
>>
>>159958573
It is obviously an attempt to fully translate to English while maintaining the original's intent. Herkz is a fuckiing idiot, but I won't fault the translator for trying
>>
>>159958498
>Changing a Japanese wordplay into an English wordplay
>Not a localization
>>
>>159958664
That's correct. You literally do not know what the term localization means, because that's not even close.
>>
>>159957579
For a single pun that's unrelated to the plot at hand, I'd rather take a very similar pun that works in English. This specific example though is shit since silliness and business don't rhyme. I remember one in Owari about knees that was fine.
>>
>>159958708
Translating is a bitch. For this one I might have gone with "act" and "pact" but it'll never feel as natural as in jap
>>
>>159957579
The right. If I wanted an untranslated anime I'd watch the raws.
>>
>>159958684
localization makes things that are esoteric based on language and location and makes them not so

this is a modification of wordplay into something that "rhymes" in english; literal localization
>>
>>159957579
>>159958181
>>159958664
>>159958684
Taking a similar example, like in Steins;Gate where the characters uses 2ch memes, while the sub "translates" them into 4chan memes, would it be considered a translation or a localization?
>>
>>159958845
That's not a similar example at all.
>>
>>159958803
The first half of your post is right, so you must have looked up the definition, and then proceeded to misunderstand it yet again. Localization is when the script is changed for cultural reasons, rather than a language barrier. "Jelly donuts" was localization. Attempting to maintain the fact that the original line was a pun is not. Next you'll say that translations of Dante's Inferno atttempting to maintain the increasing crudity of adjectives as he delves deeper into hell is localization
>>
>>159958845
Not similar, yes a localization
>>
>>159958859
But both are something that can only be fully understood in Japanese, but were changed in the English sub so it makes more sense for English speakers.

This is one of the rare cases where they actually almost made an equivalent pun in English, so I kind of give right a pass, even though the rhyming is terrible.

Compare this to Crunchyroll turning a gag in Sakura Quest specifically based around kanji written by Spanish people being turned into a misunderstanding about accidentally writing "peach" instead of "peace." That one did need the TL note, because translating it completely removed the original gag.

Both are perfectly acceptable ways, but from a fucking viewing standpoint, I don't need to fucking deconstruct every single fucking word and some (CONTEXT BUBBLES) to fucking get the idea behind a pun.

That being said, gr8 b8. Has triggered me.
>>
>>159961939
Neither is an acceptable translation. Right is not a pun, left is awkward.

The correct way to translate it would be to use an annotation, so everyone who cares would pause and everyone else would continue reading the regular translation. This is how books have done it for ages, in my language at least - anime is not above that as a medium.

The "Keikaku means plan" shit was terrible yes and notes were definitely abused, but I think it's a fucking tragedy that they were phased out entirely.
>>
>>159962055
>>159962051
>I say it's fine
>He says it's not.

Well, I lean towards what you feel, but I think they're both fine as subs, it gets the point across although badly. I do much prefer the right one over the left annotations in the middle of the fucking subs.
>>
>>159962055
Books and anime are not the same medium at all, dumbass. You pace yourself when reading books, but when translating shows and movies you have to keep the show's pace in mind. Sure it's less of a problem today when everyone can pause everything in the middle, but relying on that is a lazy and terrible approach
>>
>>159960443

>Godrobe Fresh Blood
>>
>>159962055

>>
>>159962138
>a lazy and terrible approach
It's because of people like you that we can't have good things.

So something is bad when it's abused and it's bad when pausing is not possible, so it should be avoided 100% of the time? Even in things like historical anime or anime specifically about Japanese culture where a note about something would be useful and informative?

>>159962225
Book translations > subs.
Subs are casual by definition so casual conventions can apply. It makes no sense to be MORE elitist than lit.
>>
>>159957579
Business and silliness don't even rhyme because of the sound the i's make. If you can actually translate the pun well, then go for it, if not, then put a note. If you read a book in a foreign language that butchers ideas instead of having footnotes, then you're reading the retard version.

>inb4 the tranny complains about people not knowing moon
I know moon, and I translate stuff. Unlike commie, I can actually match tone and author intent without making shitty jokes and inserting speech patterns that don't exist. I've used localized puns and translators notes in the same episode before, because blanket rules instead of looking at lines on a case by case basis is fucking stupid.
>>
>>159962278
If you're watching an historical anime and don't know who the characters are, that's your problem. The show itself assumes you know who they are, and the translator is not supposed to teach you that instead.
>>
>>159957579
I don't remember any of this. I guess I watched with good subs?

>>159957579
Both have a place and are good in their own ways. The first explains the joke while it tells it, it might not be as funny this way but you fully understand what the character meant. The second just does its best to convert the joke into english but it might go over a lot of peoples heads due to language restrictions. It boils down to preference.

You're trying to convey something in appropriate fashion for an English audience, not replicating it. You carry the author's original intent far more nicely than simply making a stiff, literal interpretation. Most meaning is already lost in translation anyways, especially for something as dense as Monogatari. If you're so strict on preserving it, you learn Japanese.
The left would never see the light of day in a respectable translation, the right is just bad writing.
>>
>>159957579
Left because I am not a retard that need everything catered to my culture.

No point in describing the pun to non-Japanese speakers if we simply don't get the pun. On the right at least it's a legitimate translation. On the left it's really just bashing us over the head with the fact that it's a pun even though we clearly understand that it is.

Back in the good old days it was fine because we would always have images like this for every title, now the problem is that you can only get 1 of them and that's saying a lot.

The solution is learning moonrunes for your hobby. But it's all perspective desu, I understand why people do not wat -kun and why people want -kun.

Left is objectively superior.
Translation notes are your friend.

Both are fine, I'd prefer the right one in isolation because in this case it is accurate. That said many of the puns in this series are not translatable with this degree of accuracy, so in the context of the whole thing consistency is important and trying too hard to stick words that don't fit just so you can retain the pun in English is just annoying.

Imagine being so far gone that you write pretend-emoticons on Twitter instead of real words.

The thing that bugs me here is that Higi isn't even written on screen.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
