Actually, she's kind of a shitty character, the more I think about it. Her only character trait is that she's a thrill junkie who's addicted to taking absurd risks and gets away with them because she's impossibly good at gambling. She's not likable as a person. None of the characters are. The male POV character is useless and only exists to gawk at Yabami, the twintails doesn't even seem to have a reason to exist after the start, and more and more focus is on the Momobami main bitch who is just nothing. Just a complete nothing.

Fukumoto did this sort of shit a thousand times better. This has better looking girls though, I'll give it that at least.

The beta is useless and stays useless, I don't think he ever contributes to victory at all. He's not the only pointless character though. Most characters in the manga end up doing nothing really. Only active mover and shaker is Yumeko herself, and since Yumeko only cares about gambling for the sake of gambling and doesn't seem to be a human being, it ends up feeling like there is no actual story. Just a string of gambles. Which would be fine, if the gambles were great, but they're usually really pedestrian and the solutions are always "I have impossible luck/memory/precognitive skills". Fukumoto this is not.

And the main villain is just trash. She gets talked up SO much and she ends up being the most boring character. Every fucking chapter somebody goes "what is the president thinking, she's so mysterious, no one can handle her mysterious genius and ingenious mystery" and it's just a load of hot air.

It's kind of funny because I devoured through the manga, read all of it in one go, but after I was done, all I felt was like I had wasted my time. That nyan-cat scene is like the last cool thing that happens in the story.

The twintail bitch also stopped being a good character the moment she got her human status back. The only interesting part of her at all was her fall from grace, and it lasted like ten chapters. After that, she still sticks around for some reason, appears in scenes and takes part in gambles, but has no apparent purpose to being there. She just is.

To be a good series, Kakegurui would need:

- actual story that isn't just a flimsy excuse for gambling scenes
- good gambling scenes with mindgames and interesting solutions
- a main character that isn't some kind of a fucking robot with no human emotions or motivations whatsoever

We can read his thoughts in the manga so that twist would require some David Cage tier asspulls.

Orbiter-kun's problem is that after Yumeko saves him from Mary, he has no reason whatsoever to take any part in the story at all. Nothing that happens concerns him directly. He's set up as a classic underdog scrub who grows balls at some point, except the ball-growing never happens and has no reason to happen.

He could leave the series entirely after the first episode and nothing would change.

So Orbiter-kun isn't suited to be a main character. Main character has to be Yumeko, as she's the only one who does things. But Yumeko is SHIT for a main character because her actions and motivations are not human in any way. The manga establishes relatively early on, then hammers it home further and further, that no, Yumeko is not just adorably eccentric, she's legitimately mentally ill and only thinks about gambling 24/7, gambling for the sake of gambling. The world could end around her and it would only be a problem because of less gambling. Even Akagi wasn't that one-note.

With characters like that, you just can't make much of a story. At the current point in the manga, the most important non-gambling thing that seems to happen are the various yuri crushes of the cast, but even they don't go anywhere.

By the way, there is no love story between Yumeko and Orbiter-kun, in case you thought there would be. Yumeko shows more affection towards the main villain than towards him. In fact, I'll predict the writer's reason for keeping Mary around is as a pity bride for him since Yumeko won't be it.
