Well, all that combined with the fact that there are even higher things at stake here than infringing on a relationship, so events that are portrayed in the right way can forge bonds between people enough that what happened in this chapter can more naturally be forgiven, whereas in story about romance relationships are the end all in a sense.
So rather than the characters just being forgiving or very good people, there could potentially be things that occur through which characters (all but) earn forgiveness or atonement. Not sure that I explained it well and even then, heroics/alliances are a distinct matter from personal ties.

I split these up on purpose because I want to address them together and apart.

On one hand, rape would still be someone violating personal space, either taking you into their body or making their way into yours, on top of making you feeling things you didn't want to/didn't want to from them/at that time, and it can have a seducing or at least subduing effect and be used against you, possibly causing you to do things without a clear mind and have many regrets later on.

In fact, it's really more that it is such a sensitive matter that it's put on a pedestal in both positive and negative ways.

If our society wasn't as perverted as it is and explicit sexual knowledge was less common along with less people masturbating, having indecent thoughts, etc then when sex or rape happened it would in some ways be even more of a shock or surprised. Part of not being loose about it is so that you don't ruin your sexual experiences/ruin the experiences of others.
Even if we were a highly jaded society or one that saw sex as nothing more than procreation, that violation in and of itself would at the very least be unpleasant. In a society like that we'd likely be highly concerned with efficiency and someone we didn't think deserved our attention doing that would be at least a waste of time to us. If it was because it was an apocalyptic world and people were jaded due to conditions, being raped would be an unpleasant waste of our energy and time to get resources at the very least.
Hell, thinking about it now, the Exorcist society and culture could've been any one of these extremes given the setting.

So while putting sex on a pedestal raises its importance in a lot of ways, its natural importance and significance is part of why it is put on a pedestal and shouldn't be taken lightly. But like the saying about it being fun and games until the monkey pokes someone in the eye-

The heroine has a kind-hearted fiance' back home who she loves, but the two has not yet get any intimate action. And while the two love each other, their engagement is not by their own choice and sexual desired at first, but family duty.
