I just finished the end of evangelion. What the fuck actually happened? I feel like all the christian symbolism is supposed to convey a lot of the meanings behind the super-being that Rei became once she merged, but I am at a loss.

The thing I got was that Shinji becomes happy by forming relationships, so his dream is this world without mental boundaries where he is connected with everyone. His introverted character due to the events in his life have crippled his ability/willingness to form relationships, therefore depriving him of such connections and happiness, making him miserable and ready to give up on life. But he doesn't give up on life, as the dialogue in the surreal sequence reveals, because he hasn't exhausted his chance at happiness and goes looking for it every time he gives up, because he hasn't experienced everything there is to experience. I'm not sure why he rejected this fantasy, however, considering that by his standards it's pure happiness. I might have to rewatch that.

Then the monologue about how the Eva will always exist and why it was created by man reveals the author's conviction that humanity strives to achieve as much as possible because it wants to leave a mark on the universe? Proof of existence? Or not?

Then Earth is destroyed somehow, and then why is Asuka alive, let alone lying next to him? Did Seele succeed? What was Seele's plan again? Why?

Is everything actually this vague or am I just fucking retarded? Thanks.

So basically, names and superficial concepts, like I said. I know Lilith was the first woman and Adam the first man which is why their names are given to the givers of life, but you don't need to know either Jewish or Christian mythology to either understand or enjoy NGE.

The true meaning was revealed in the ending of the show. It's why I prefer that one. None of it mattered, not really. It didn't matter what the kooky secret club was up to or where the angels came from, and they tried to show you that. The reason you cared and kept watching was to see Shinji, the character solve his problems. It could have been about battling washing machines for all the difference it made. The rest is just trivia.

As for the trivia, you must decide for yourself. Rei can appear only as the dead, it seems, and she need to destroy your A.T. field to take you into instrumentality. Manipulating your emotions is how this is done. For guitar guy, she used fear to slip into his heart. For glasses and lesbo, she used love to break their walls. For Gendo, it was uh, regret or something, but they didn't take him into instrumentality anyway so whatever.

And for Shinji? It was hate, with Rei posing as Asuka to get him to strangle "Asuka" and that's right when the music plays and the pilot's ego barrier can't take much more of "this". Remember, Asuka died too.

I feel like you're right, the original ending was much more fitting and true to the author's intentions I think, all the mattered was the characters and their problems, not the schemes and mechas or the angels. Which is why they abandoned the whole plotline and focused on the characters in the end with the excuse of the instrumentality project. This is what I got the first time around.

But I heard that the real ending was in the movie or something so I went ahead and watched that. At the end of the day, I won't say that I regret watching the movie, but I will say that it felt completely unnecessary and didn't really explain that much more anyway. Regarding Shinji's fantasy world, him wanting to "blow up the world" and hating everyone and thus causing everyone's death is more a result of an emotional tantrum than the realisation of his fantasy, or dream in his own words, where he envisions paradise as this world where everyone is connected with one another, forming relationships (which is what he craves) with everyone. The "fantasy" that is realised in the movie is his hate for the world, as a result of his suffering and suicidal thoughts, a world devoid of the relationships that make him happy, it's not his dream world. I thought he was rejecting his own paradise, but he's only rejecting his useless solution to his suffering, rejecting the tantrum itself. His dream is still there, unrealised, but the real world is the closest he can get to it, because it's the only place where he can form relationships, however painful.

Yeah, that's exactly what I felt with the original ending, it was unique and enjoyable. They did away with all the pretenses and focused on what they did best.

My problem with EoE is that I expected a lot more stuff to be explained and thus was disappointed. It was clear that the creators did not want to show or explain more stuff than they did originally, so EoE is basically just a restructured version of the original ending. They are similar in all the ways that matter I think. Whether or not there's one more Asuka vs Evas fight scene is irrelevant.

I've just rewatched the entire series, plus EoE, over the course of two days. That makes the fourth time I've watched it. Since I hadn't watched it for a few years, I expected that my perspectives on who is best girl would change, even a little.

I'm more of a Reifag now than I was last time watched it. You can't be best girl in a show which has Rei, no matter how good you are. I used to find her cute, but now I find her inspiring. That story of a being which isn't really a human, nor a god, but slowly learns to respect humanity by living next to its most hopeless members is heartwarming.

Plus, her lap is the comfiest.

I find Shinji x Rei implications of 2.22 really unsettling, mostly because there was really little in the original.

Death and Rebirth summed it up pretty well.
Shinji is EXTREMELY emotionally shut in. He doesnt show true love to any of the girls.
Misato stands for "family". A strong shoulder, some emotional support
Rei stands for "mother". A familiar being that made him feel safe
Asuka stands for "sex". The only person shinji saw as a "girl" of his age.
And yet the only person he ever shown love was Kaworu because he was unconditional. Not a healthy love either, tho.

Music is a big part of the puzzle. So, my assertion is that Rei Ayanami can only assume the form of the deceased. Although it's possible she can appear as the living, and it was merely never shown. At any rate, she was only shown as appearing as the dead, and I will work with this.

She appears as Misato, Yui, Kaworu, and Ritsuko, who have all died before the music montage begins. But Asuka has died as well, in her fight with the mass production evangelions, she is split apart and impaled. I believe Shinji is aware of this fact, now that I think about it. Anyway.

If Rei uses emotions to break your A.T. field and steal you away into instrumentality, to get through to Shinji, who has abandoned love, she must use hatred. A similar thing is viewed with guitar guy, who is drawn into instrumentality through terror instead of a peaceful death in the arms of a lover, opening the door of your heart, just like the title theme.

So, if it's a phantom Rei masquerading as Asuka that goaded shinji into strangling "Asuka", we know why he strangled her the first time. And don't forget... Rei is good at getting people to strangle her with just words, isn't she? She did that as a mere child. Compared to a great scientist, tricking Shinji should be child's play for her.

Now, where does that leave us? We still need to figure out why Shinji strangled Asuka again, assuming I am correct thus far.
