You probably should wait since S3 is only in a year, but the anime is pretty hit or miss as an adaptation. The OSTs are top notch and the designs are vastly improved but some scenes (like the armored titan fight) are better in the manga.

Anyway, I wouldn't call it a trainwreck but SnK is going in weird directions. Entertaining sure but weird, so don't expect too much good writing, what you get is a wild ride.
