That particular training was pointless mostly because it didn't really introduce anything new. The fights/results weren't necessarily pointless.
You could make the argument that those characters ended up accomplishing nothing either, but that's not really important.

HxH just reads like a diary more than anything. It's about things that happen to the characters. If the story points out that Kurapika's revenge is hollow, or that Gon is selfish, it doesn't change that fact. There's rarely another side to the story.

What makes something "not shallow"? I don't really feel like HxH is attempting to defend itself on that front. Characters like Wing and Biscuit exist because the plot required them, and that's fine with Togashi. Those characters don't have a stake in anything else going on, and the actual development only happens to a very small group

I dunno, I don't think it's worth the time digging into details for this. The best I can give is impressions. Though, I do feel like One Piece makes an effort to have its characters feel like they would still exist without the plot.

I wish the 2011 anime and its rabid fanbase would die, but people are too aesthetically ignorant to recognize that it's bad. But good thing they have me, the friendly anon who is willing to teach them!

These people who think 2011 is a masterpiece are the same ones who think the manga is shit. Despite the fact that 90% or more of what makes the anime is good is the writing, and then the voice acting which I admit is superb, and ALSO the fact that the anime degrades the content with a lot of its visual decisions, these people will ignore all of these points and cite a few pages of the manga that look like trash and say "wow based Madhouse making a 10/10 anime out of mediocre material."

I think I've had maybe 4 people agree with me across the 6 years I've intermittently been posting. Excuse me for trying to get people to appreciate the manga and to view the 2011 with a critical eye so that they can enjoy the good scenes, and reinforce the bad with knowledge from the source material.

Friendly reminder that all the mess they found themselves into was because Netero wanted to have his last duel with Meruem and they also wanted to minimize casualties and keep the whole Chimera Ant business a secret , so yeah, they could have sent the Zodiacs to faceroll ants, but then Netero would have missed his last chance to fight to his limits, they could have had more casualties and the whole thing might have gotten out of hand.

Otherwise just say that Togashi is a hack or something, I don't know.
