I remember grades 5-10 being nothing but minutiae about the fur trade, and a big list of who discovered what. We'd "learn" about pemmican every year. They managed to foster a powerful apathy towards our history, at least among my age cohort.

White South African here. There's a lot of great history to African folktales and myth. The issue is that it was never mass distributed like European folklore and myth. That shit has gone to every corner of the Earth. It's why whenever there's a non-Japanese setting it's pretty much always European.

It's not that African myth isn't really interesting, it's just that it was never distributed on a mass scale.

I don't think Japan really defiles our myths, they just endearingly over-exaggerate stereotypes about us. I'd love to live in the America that anime portrays, where the women are all blondes with huge tits, where everyone is always annoyingly loud and cheerful, where cheeseburgers fall from the sky like rain...

>inb4 just move to Nebraska

We've lost so much of the ancient knowledge (due to burning of the great library of alexandria to the sackings of baghdad) that civilization was held back at least 50 years.

Even if they don't have much to add in the way of science, people from thousands of years ago did have much different viewpoints and could offer a lot in the way of culture.
Plus people back then were a lot more attuned to their local areas. ie; there was an Egyptian architect in the 50's that realised modern Egyptian houses are shit because they're all based on western homes which were made for a much colder European climate, so he used ancient Egyptian homes as a model and vastly improved the living standards of the average Egyptian house.
>>
>>159595801
They're annoyingly loud alright but they're all either unhappy or drugged out on opioids so they can't not be happy.

>>159583324
A lot of people are saying there aren't Canadian myths; I would propose Viking settlements on Newfoundland.
While not "myth" we know little about them, how long the people lived there are what these first European proto-Canadians were like. A mythic interpretation or character based on the leader of these people could be interesting, and maybe be considered a distinctly European Canadian myth.
This doesn't really relate to anime, but there could be like an Rider Eric the Red servant in fate or whatever
also the nips love anne of green gables but those adaptations are good so I wouldn't call that story defiled.
