What is it about translating manga that makes people into complete manchildren?

Context
>New character appears in a manga, instead of writing his actual name as it is, MS shits a fanfictional "translation" of his name.

Not only is MS dude completely wrong when comparing translating dialogue to character names, but the translation he is defending is also incorrect.
>>
>>159439476
>scanlator drama in comments sections
No one fucking cares, discuss it on whatever shithole of a site that is.
>>
>>159439476
So what was the actual name and how did they translate it?
>>
>>159439476
Just like that satanophany thing a while ago, these people just like to have power over others.
>>
>>159440347

I would like to know too since I dropped the manga long ago. By that reasoning though they should also translate Akainu/Aokiji/Kizaru into english too since they're retards and all.
>>
>speed translate using google
>scanlator butthurt imminent
It gets boring fast though. You can fish only few reactions out of hardcore autists like that before everything repeats like old tune.
>>
>>159440347
actual name: Katakuri (derived from "Katakuriko" meaning Potato Starch)
official name: Katakuri
niggastream name: Dogtooth

Somewhat related: Where do I get picked up for some small translation /a/ related stuff?

Been studying Japanese for a minute, and would like to help out in some stuff while further practicing my stuff; at the same time I don't want to dedicate my life/take on a lot of work to a translation project.

I.E. where can I get some translations scraps thrown my way without much commitment?
>>
>>159440935
Scanlation thread, or just make a thread asking for a chapter anons want translated.
>>
>>159441206
>asking for a chapter anons want translated.
I might do that.
Thanks.
>>
>>159440935
>Been studying Japanese for a minute
Not sure how literal to interpret this. If you're not at least N2 don't bother at all. Just read shit for your own enjoyment.
As for short projects, there's plenty of script only translation requests on sadpanda, if you don't mind translating porn. They're short and diverse enough in subject matter to be good things to tackle.
>>
Scanlation drama is so sad.

Just do it because you love it, and when you stop, hand it over to someone who will. Just like an adult would do.
>>
>>159439476
Well ask yourself what kind of people would work for free? 仕方が無い
>>
>>159441757
Even if they dont hand it over, what stops others from translating it if there are no updates for a long time?
>>
>>159439476
>>159440782
>using niggerstream
They get so much wrong in everything they translate that it makes discussing a series hard when the official translations imply something completely different.
>>
>>159440782
Fug, I'm not even a onepiece fag but that shit is unacceptable. Yes, they are the ones who know Japanse, but completely changing a name from Katakuriko to Dogtooth is bullshit.
They should at least translate the name literally if they hate it that much.
Niggerstream, not even once!
>>
>>159440935
>Been studying Japanese for a minute
I hope you wanted to write "decade" instead on "minute" because if you have really been studying for a whole fucking minute, then the manga scanlation scene is dead.
>>
>>159442216
Katakuri does mean dogtooth(the flower), but the antagonist names have a candy theme this arc. I'm 100% sure they went with "dogtooth" because they wanted this jelly bean-throwing villain to be as edgy and dark as possible.
>>
>>159439476
>What is it about translating that makes people into complete manchildren?
Fixed for you. Through manga, web novels and RPG MV games are easiest to get into translation business. The easier it is, the more human garbage you get.
>>
>>159442216
>they are the ones who know Japanse
MS? Don't make me laugh. I bet you anything that they're just proficient with using Weblio if >>159442519 is any indication.
>>
>>159440935
Try panda maybe unless you specifically want to avoid hentai.
People are generally less picky about their porn.
>>
>>159440935
I think /vp/ has a couple of older Pokemon manga that they'd like to see translated. Since they're Pokemon, they're aimed at a much younger audience and should be easier to practice with.
>>
We should find other groups and boycott Niggastream
>>
>>159440935
Find something you like and post a translation. Or hop in a thread when you see someone dumping raws.
>>
>>159445203
There's groups doing most series normally and anons sharing the viz versions. As for speed translations, I doubt any group has the means and motivation to compete with niggastream.
>>
>>159440746
>dropped the manga

It's picking up steam again. When you have the time, you should check it out.
>>
>>159441926
The fact that when a very popular site posts a manga, everyone will read it from there instead. Even if you have a superior translation no-one will care to even search unless there's no other option.

Those faggots are supporting asshole translators tacitly, and frankly they deserved to get cucked, because they love being manhandled.

Anywhere but here.

God damn fucking translator drama is so fucking retarded.

You don't fucking own the series you're translating. Stop trying to fucking claim it as yours. Neither legally nor morally, do you own any part of the process of either the original work nor the translation. Yes, that's right. You do not own the translation. This is part of the copyright.
>>
>>159462793
You are retarded. Nobody claims they own it.
>>
>>159463259

Fictional names are a thing, even in Japanese.
There's no reason to translate a name they wouldn't actually use into an English word or name just because it wouldn't be used in reality.

It's still a name for a character.
>>
>>159464358
There's a big difference between calling a character cherry blossom and calling one melody, though.

If the name can be translated, it should be.
>>
>>159464264

>>
>>159464545
>>I have never encountered fiction with goofy names before
Just as a side note on this, as an ESL speaker goofy names in fiction are still easier to digest if they aren't in your mother tongue, even if you speak the other language well.

>>159464454
>>159464358
And on this: Stop being such ass-blasted faggots about this, both of you!
There are times when its appropriate to translate a name, there are times when its not.

For example:
A girls is called 桜, Sakura -> you don't translate it.
A magical girl alter-ego is 魔法少女桜 (Mahō shōjo sakura) with the power to shoot cherry blossoms and her costume is modeled after cherry blossoms -> Its fair to translate this 桜 as cherry blossom
>>
>>159464850
>There are times when its appropriate to translate a name
Nope. What you've described is a title, not a name.
>>
>>159464771
>Tell me when a single Japanese person moves to the west and starts using a loanword as their fucking name.
Imagine being this much of a fucking moron. Do you know how many immigrants localise their names, you stupid fuck?

There are plenty of nips who use loanwords as names too, have you seriously never heard of the kirakira name bullshit? The other week there was a fucking "Princess Candy" on TV, I saw some poor fucker named "Kaiser" last year, 2 seconds would bring up a million examples of this shit.
>>
>>159464923
>Do you know how many immigrants localise their names, you stupid fuck?
cool ask the author then.
>>
>>159464519
They really overdo it with the fucking TN notes though. Honestly. I'm trying to read a manga and I see all this bullshit.

>>
>>159464914

Lets pick a English example, Carpenter ... now there is Carpenter as a JOB that will translate as something else to another language and the name that doesnt.

Americans appear to love to translate EVERYTHING to English including names, this is why I see absurdities as Henri IV to Henry IV.
>>
>>159465089
It's hilarious that some weebs take the author's word as god when they have no understanding of English and just write whatever shit they want because it looks "cool".
>>
>>159464713
Fish cake. That's literally what it is. That's literally what we call it in English.
>>
>>159465266
>That's literally what we call it in English.
Here's a fish cake lad, learn English, would you?
>>
>>159465108
But if you were translating from English you would leave the name as Carpenter, and Carpenter the Carpenter would still be called Carpenter, even if you translated his job description.
>>
>>159445459
Pretty sure Jamini and Fallen Angels compete with them on several WSJ series. Half of the time they release before NS.
>>
>>159465317
>every fish cake is the same
Just like every biscuit is the same right?
>>
>>159465351
Biscuit has a regional variation in meaning, which is completely different.

The correct name for kamaboko is kamaboko. Fish paste is a lot closer in meaning to the original over fish cake, which is completely off base. Luckily, loan words exist, so you can just call things by their proper name if enough people get behind the idea.
>>
>>159464914
Anon, take a deep breath, let go of your stupefying anger about something so insignificant and think about what i posted.
I din't say names should always be translated, i just said there are instances where names can be translated.

To expand on it: Normal names, used in their normal context, should not be translated.
Yamada Sakura should stay that and not become Cherryblossom Highfield/Mountainpaddy
But when either a word is used as a name that's usually not a given name, or a meaningful nickname is used then it can be translated, in my opinion. And tittles-as-names fall squarely in that.

And just to be clear, the later is the far, far less common case, but its's not non-existent.
>>
>>159439476
Go away.
>>
>>159465336

Yes, thats what happens but when you have names such as "The Pink Panther" do you leave it as such or translate as well?

Of course it should be translated, problem is when its translated INTO English we have the type of people that want to translate the names as well, juts like Henri turning into Henry.
>>
>>159465421
>all these typos
Not him but you oughta take a deep breath yourself. Also your post reads like a MS blogpost on their site
>>
>>159465462

My Hero Academy, there are Superhero names that are translated as their given names are of course, not.

So are you saying Allmight that is clearly a superhero name should been keep in its original Japanese?

>>
>>159465415
>Biscuit has a regional variation in meaning, which is completely different.
Have you even... what?

There are many many kinds of kamaboko and there is no loan word for it. It's just fish cake.
>>
>>159465543
All Might's name is written in katakana. There is no translation here. It's literally the same name without the awkward japanese characters to spell it
>>
>>159465631

I never seen the raws, also I kinda dropped it several months back.

I think my point still stands, some characters have names that should be translated because they arent their given names, sometimes they should be translated because of the setting, lets say a setting were their name is their occupation and they are always referred as such.

Dogtooth is just MS being stupid and a example of how NOT to translate, hardly a suprise.
>>
>>159462308
Whats KM? never heard of it.
>>
>>159465592
>>There are many many kinds of kamaboko and there is no loan word for it. It's just fish cake.
The vast majority of those kinds are minor regional variations or fucking pattering differences. The loan word is kamaboko, dude.

Fish cake means something completely different. Kamaboko is steamed, fish cakes are fried. In your mind, are fucking crab sticks fish cakes?
>>
>>159465850
Scroll up.
>>
>>159465862
>The loan word is kamaboko, dude.
No. Kamaboko is not a loan word. It is just the Japanese word.
>>
>>159465550
Agreed, just pointing out that there are groups competing with NS.
>>
>>159439476
>What is it about translating manga that makes people into complete manchildren?
It's an activity with a relatively low barrier to entry but requires a lot of effort and gives no reward except ego-stroking, so it's mostly done by people who badly want their egos stroked.
>>
>>159466192
>Kamaboko is not a loan word. It is just the Japanese word.
Are you confused about what loan words are or something?

What next, "ramen" isn't a loan word?
>>
>>159439476
Because there's a subsection of weeaboos who consider themselves special snowflakes due to their hobby. Learning the language and becoming more involved in that hobby only intensifies this; they begin glamorizing themselves and their valuable trait to the point where an ego forms and, when challenged, they lash out in the most obvious way: insulting people in cringey weeaboo speak.
>>
>>159459003
>leech sites that resize images
Yeah, you might as well go to Batoto to read the non-resized stuff.

Also, why the fuck are you posting 3-months-old drama?
>>
>>159466712
>caring about resize on online readers
>>
>>159466784
Transcoding is what really gets me. If the original image is a 4 MB PNG, then don't fucking transcode it to a shitty 1200 px JPG at 50% quality.
Batoto not only does not transcode anything, but their reader also resizes stuff to 1381x1970 if it doesn't fit on the screen.
I used this as an example. https://bato.to/reader#e9f534a524f38f15
Meanwhile, mangago transcodes it to a 1241 px JPG.
Mangapark transcodes it to a 1241 px JPG.
Kissmanga is the only one that does not transcode anything, but their online reader displays the image at full resolution, so reading a 2102x3000 px image is hard on a 1080 screen. But then again, Kissmanga leeches off Batoto, so you might as well go to the source where the chapters are posted. It also doesn't have the corrected chapters.

There's just so much wrong with these shitty online readers. If you can't download the officially translated versions of the manga from something like comixology, your best bet is to read/download it from the scanlator's site, Batoto or just not read it at all. Everything else is just crap, including Madokami since they also just leech off Batoto.
