Yeah, I was surprised the manga went with typical bearded sky daddy and other lesser gods. Being X in the anime was a lot more sinister and mysterious, which I found much more fitting for a being that claimed to be god. The manga took him/it from a menacing, truly powerful force to a petty overgrown child.

Because manga leaves things to the imagination. If you have a good imagination your mind filling in the blanks will lead to a much more compelling and engrossing experience than some random chinamen animators take on it.

Let me put this another way. Why do some people find chicks in one-piece swimsuits hotter than naked ones? You still basically still see the goods but there's enough wiggle room that your mind is forced to add the details and those details will be geared towards whatever your personal preferences. There aren't going to be any blemishes in whatever illusion your mind cooks up.

Basically fantasy > reality. Anime brings it closer to "reality" (adds sound, color etc.) but the "reality" isn't as cool to you than whatever your imagination created. I could probably explain it better but I'm exhausted and you should get the general idea.
