Never really liked the shadow plotline myself. I guess they needed it to show off Boruto's doujutsu but even that's stupid considering he never showed it in the movie AND the manga vs. Momoshiki so chances are they're going to retcon that when they get to that point.

His doujutsu is stupid and unnecessary. Even if it wasn't, at least the way they decided to reveal it was considering the movie already showed he could do without it.

She was a decent star in the Gaiden, but the secrets hinted at at the start turned out to be merely that Sasuke is a deadbeat dad who hasn't made time for his family in at least a decade, and Sakura's a crappy mother who is still a doormat for Sasuke. Which is an underwhelming resolution. Then in the Boruto movie she was mostly irrelevant, her primary roll being to nag Boruto into taking the Chunin exams. Then the Boruto manga made her look ugly, started with a rehash of the movie that gave her no additional development, then once it finally reached the point of new material, made her look like a cheap whore. Meanwhile the anime started up, and rather than doing anything to really develop her, or her friendship with Boruto, Sarada's been mostly irrelevant, and Sumire was not only introduced, but developed to the point that anime only viewers could reasonably make the assumption that Sumire is the female lead.

None of that really lends itself to increasing or even maintaining popularity. Then in response to Sumire, some of Sarada's more autistic fans have taken to attacking Sumire. Calling her a filler character, wanting her to be imprisoned or die for her crimes, wanting her to be written out of the series with a transfer, etc. Which doesn't exactly endear them or Sarada to anyone, and has helped provoke a backlash.

The biggest thing they could do to eliminate the "too much like Naruto" stigma is to put Boruto into a situation that doesn't need to rely on Naruto nostalgia. Pairing him with Sarada only drags Boruto's potential to be a different character to Naruto.

Being attached to Sumire, romantic or not gives Boruto that oppurtunity to break away from what is expected of him.

I've really been loving the manga lately. Tentou is a surprisingly likable character and I love his friendship with Boruto.
