Nina is pretty great, but she's no replacement for Favaro. She feels cheap because he design is too similar to Amira's. If those two were still around and she was just added alongside them it'd be okay. I can see why people got pissed off at the genre shift towards shoujou though. Personally I don't mind they fixed most of the show's faults just also removed the strongest part.

She isn't unlikable herself, she's unlikable because she's changed the whole tone of the story and replaced the best character in the whole show. It's such a mind bogglingly stupid decision that I can only assume the writers have been drunk the whole time to think that was a good idea. I would have dropped it by now, but they tease just enough Rita, Kaiser, and Favaro to keep me hoping that second cour will be less shitty.

And when I say shitty, I don't mean the show is actually bad in and of itself, I mean that it's utter shit compared to the first season it was supposed to build on.

I agree that the later episodes were stronger. But the first episode of GTO was actually kinda great. it was a perfect representation and introduction to the series as a whole, and the plot arc was small scale and self contained. It didn't try to hook you, or coerce you into watching the rest with some mind blowing twist. It was actually kind of a pilot episode, which is interesting in an industry that doesn't use pilot episodes
