One of the things that's important early is Light's perfect golden boy persona, and how it helps him avoid suspicion. The point of adapting a work from a different country, is to adapt to your country's culture.
Obviously this means that Japanese actors (who are all Asians) will be replaced with American actors (who are not all white, but rather a mix of races).
