About showing/telling, it's not just nen exposition where it happens. But for example, Hisoka was using cards to slice since his first appearance. We don't need a whole explanation and name for the technique ("shu" IIRC.) Other series do the same thing (imbuing ki into objects) without saying anything.

That particular training was pointless mostly because it didn't really introduce anything new. The fights/results weren't necessarily pointless.
You could make the argument that those characters ended up accomplishing nothing either, but that's not really important.

HxH just reads like a diary more than anything. It's about things that happen to the characters. If the story points out that Kurapika's revenge is hollow, or that Gon is selfish, it doesn't change that fact. There's rarely another side to the story.

What makes something "not shallow"? I don't really feel like HxH is attempting to defend itself on that front. Characters like Wing and Biscuit exist because the plot required them, and that's fine with Togashi. Those characters don't have a stake in anything else going on, and the actual development only happens to a very small group

I dunno, I don't think it's worth the time digging into details for this. The best I can give is impressions. Though, I do feel like One Piece makes an effort to have its characters feel like they would still exist without the plot.

Kurapika - Emits his nen in the form of little twelve-legged spiders. In Emperor Time, each leg has a different nen ability.
Killua - Manipulates his own claws to use as bullets (also uses some Enhancement). He can supercharge his nail bullets with electricity, but only if he has a cell phone or a battery on him for him to draw electricity from. There'd be a really cool scene where he's near a dam or a windmill and he uses a ton of electricity all at once.
Gon - He can copy the hatsu of anyone he's punched in the past for 5 minutes. He can only copy it at half efficiency, and if he tries to copy two, they're only at quarter efficiency. Once he decides to copy a hatsu, there's a little fish swimming in circles around Gon's head, and he can't make it disappear until the 5 minutes are up.
Leorio - He can conjure medical equipment and artificial organs.
Morel - Transmutes his nen into smoke, uses Emission and Manipulation to make the smoke move at different ranges, and can transmute the smoke at long ranges to give it different properties.

Leorio developed an emission skill that was meant to be used for surgery, but also could be used for combat. So he'd probably do something similar, maybe conjure a magic micro knife that can be materialized inside of people, so his surgeries would be minimally invasive. Or something.
Transmuters are not great at emission or manipulation, so he wouldn't be able to do anything like his current ability. Probably transmute his aura into smoke, but it would have totally different applications

Unless Kurapika has a reason to be angry at morel, Morel obviously wins. With his eyes scarlet he might win but probably not, maybe if he steals some awesome ability before going into the fight.
