Kaiji didn't have enough .oney to win the bog, so at the eleventh hour he signed a contract with the Yakuza guy who'd been helping him to borrow some yen. The contract had a hidden clause that accrued interest every x minutes until Kaiji won. Aafter winning and dividing up the prize Kaiji got drugged by the Yakuza and the interest was taken from his share. He then blew the pittance he had left on Pachinko.

A card game using two standard decks of playing cards, designed by Kazuya. Rather than deciding the victor via hands such as Straight, Flush, etc., each hand consists of just one card and is ranked according to its normal value, suits not factoring into the value at all. In addition, like in the earlier E-Card game, the absolute weakest card actually beats the absolute strongest card--a 2 is the absolute weakest, and an ace is the absolute strongest, so the 2 wins against an ace. If both players play a card of equal value, it is a tie. At the start of each round, players are given two cards, and must play only one of them, the most valuable card being the winner. Standard poker betting rules apply and the cards of both players are always revealed after betting even if one player folds (but they don't affect the outcome in that case). In addition, all of this is played at the top of a large tower, on a mechanical shuffling table Kazuya has designed, which he names "Mother Sophie". The table is placed on a set of tracks, and moves towards the loser's side's edge with each loss.

You are dealt two cards, you play one. There are lights that tell you how many UP (8 through ace) and DOWN (2 through 7) cards each players has. Bets are done using tokens representing a "life", the lifetime income of a typical guy (and, naturally, Kaiji will bet his own life too).

Basically it's a psychological game like E-Card, but translation thus far doesn't have blatant cheating.

The fact that Kaiji was dealt deuces when Kazua had aces seems pretty uncanny to be a coincidence. Kinda as though Mother Sophie is programmed to give player a fighting chance against the strongest card. It might really be just a coincidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are more rules of that sort.

Sadly no. I tried giving Saki a try and went through the first series and was disappointed on how mahjong takes a backseat compared to everything else. The girls just bullshit their way through wins without much logic/reading, not even a quarter of the detail Akagi has.
