They may not get exactly what they want, but it feels like a coming of age story, for Legosi at least. A story about him learning to assert himself healthily.

This was part of Legosi's rehabilitation. If he had reverted to his instincts I don't think the panda would have stopped him, but Sad Panda wants to help him learn to control those urges.

The Machine Gun is just insurance and he mentions he had a hidden weapon a few pages earlier. Had things gone more sour I think he would have pulled it, and had Legosi not turned out to be so useful it would have happened even sooner.
