Death Note was famous in the mid-2000s because it had one of the few good live-action adaptions to an anime.

It makes sense for L to be white and the major cast members to be white. L being a minority also makes sense in vacuum. If Asians didn't exist. The fact that Asians are the second most common minority in west coast/seattle. Therefore if you follow the rational, a minority to play L would have been an Asian. So the anomaly isn't the white recasting but rather the black recasting of L.

Getting a ton of japs to play in a western movie would be likely tough, so it was easier to just cast a bunch of people within the domestic audience which they are trying to appeal to, so white people in a western film isn't really surprising. The jarring stuff with L is just that it's a complete 180 on his design, same with Light in characterization. It just shows that they didn't even give a fuck and hoped it would go over well on name alone. The whole white thing with the mc is also strange, because i've never met a home grown jew in my life that considers himself white, especially the women.
