The original ending of EoE was emphatically fatalistic. To accept life for it was, not afraid of the pains, but rather pushing through to see the happy moments.

To just undo everything is a slap in the face of the original ending. So are the rebuilds for that matter.

I absolutely despise those reset everything endings, with very very few exceptions, and the manga is one of the worst cases.

Besides, the characterization of the manga is weird. The characters got expanded, thats right, but i dont feel they do in the right ways, there are many divergences from the original characters, which are completely fine already.

That's because there's so much less information in the anime about their characters that faggots make up whatever characteristics they want for each character.
Many ending was a way better too. After 15 years of sitting on EoE, it's like "yeah we get it, the 2deep4me things is cool, now can we get a conclusive narrative?". And that's what the manga was. It tied together all the different plot threads together and made a believable conclusion to their convergence. Unlike Anno who just wanted to make an artsy bullshit asspull.

Sure it sounds so "deep", but that's the only thing. It works better as a standalone. The entire plot of NGE was unnecessary. All 24 episodes simply served as exposition to Shinji's emotional state. It was just Anno asspulling biblical references while Shinji talks to himself for half the movie. None of the lore was addressed, only new more confusing lore was added.

End of Evangelion was great, but it wasn't a great ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

One of the main inspirations behind Evangelion was Freudian psychology. In it, there's this idea called the Oedipus/Electra Complex, where we model our sexual desires off of our opposite gendered parent- in Shinji's case, Yui.
This actually makes a lot of sense evolutionarily- the point of life is to reproduce, so obviously we would model ourselves based on the most sexually successful people we know as children: our parents. We'd model our sexual behavior off of our same-gender parent, and our sexual desires off our opposite gender parent.
However, this is also a sign of immaturity- instead of developing one's sexual tastes, you would be staying in a state of childhood, never advancing or individualizing.
It's pretty clear that the Evas are somewhat representative of mothers, with the entry plugs being wombs. After all, pilots are literally inside their mothers, and are submerged in a life-sustaining fluid. I'll make the stretch that LCL is representative of amniotic fluid, where life is developed and where only undeveloped children can survive in. It's fundamentally a substance that represents immaturity as a whole: both the immaturity of the pilots, and the immaturity of humanity as a whole who escape their fears and weaknesses during Instrumentality.

Shinji's story is all about that- maturing as an adult and establishing himself as an individual. In EoE, he is given a choice to either keep running away (Instrumentality), or mature (rejecting it). Of course, he initially chooses to run away, but eventually makes his big breakthrough and decides to stop running away and starts to mature. Instrumentality ends, and he has developed an identity strong enough for him to escape sea of LCL (representing him breaking away for his parents, his immaturity).
The entire show is about him eventually leaving the comfort of his mother through developing maturity and individuality. It's very Freudian in it's obsession with mothers, and it's not particularly subtle.
Now, let's look at the three love interests in the show: Rei, Misato, and Asuka. Rei is the clone of his mother. She is literally the embodiment of Yui, although she is far from it emotionally. Misato, on the other hand, is completely unrelated to Yui in either genetics or appearance, but is very much emotionally Shinji's mother. Asuka is the only one who is in no way a mother to Shinji, and in fact both looks and acts distinctly un-motherly towards him.
Considering Shinji's arc away from his mother and towards individuality, it just makes sense that he would have to end up with the only love interest that specifically doesn't have some motherly relationship with him. Therefore, Shinji has to end up with Asuka in order for his entire character arc to make sense.
tl;dr: Shinji's story is all about separating himself from his mother, and Asuka's the only one who is in no way representative of a mother to him.

That's why I think the rebuilds are sequels - both Shinji and Asuka learned their lessons from the first go around, but they're still fuck-ups and fall back into the same rut by 3.0. Shinji's much more outgoing and actively trying to fight for Rei instead of just crying for someone to save him, and Asuka is a lot more upfront about her emotions (at least to herself) and tries to understand Shinji.

The only problem is Shinji being Shinji more or less ignores Asuka to try and protect Rei, which hurts Asuka deeply. I mean his first words after they've been reunited (which isn't long in his mind) is how Rei is doing, but he doesn't ask her about herself. Of course, it wouldn't be NGE if the characters didn't have major communication issues.

I think it is partially true, but only for the beginning. She was trying to seduce him because she couldn't tolerate someone not falling for her.
However, there is a point you sunk too much time in a specific behavior, that it becomes the norm.
Lets say, if shinji showed some affection back by, let's say, episode 20, then she might not dump him.

I had this kind of discussion before with some anons when someone suggested the series should be longer. There is no space on it to expand without breaking the story. In the "happier" half of the series, shinji was about to overcome his depression. If you make the happy moments longer, he would leave the depression hole that drives the series. He would most certainly end up dating one of the girls, and it would be over.
On the other hand if you make the depressing moments longer, well, they wont be much longer. Shinji and asuka had both attempted suicide recently, and would do it again given the chance if things didnt take a drastic change (like what EoE was)
