There was one chapter where he was probably about to have sex with her, she basically crawled into his bed but got cold feet at the last moment and he sort of waved it off. But I don't think he ever loved her romantically, and he knew that he had other shit to do and that there was basically no way they could live easily together. So he left. I really liked them together but it was the better way, the ending didn't pull any punches or try to be anything but a fitting and sensible conclusion. Unfortunately that means Rin never got to be with the guy she loved, although I guess she eventually found someone else; or at least had a family.
