I actually prefer the movie's streamlined plot.
The manga goes completely bonkers later on, with some Hokuto-no-Ken-tier post-apocalyptic gang warfare, fucking 'Murrica sending their army, cults, DBZ battles ...
To me, the anime captures the essence of AKIRA a lot better.
The kind of nightmarish 80's cyberpunk / dystopian future, that basically takes all problems we have in our society today (overpopulation, corruption, destruction of the environment, injustice, having no purpose in one's life, etc.) and turns it up to eleven,
mixed with secret government experiments and children with psy-powers that look like 80 year-olds, because they got fucked up so bad.

Also, Kei was amazingly cute, and people who don't know or like her should all be gassed tbqh.
