Because he was a decoy protagonist designed to redirect the spotlight from the true hero of the show, Simon. He himself always knew Simon was the true hero all along and made all his plans depend on him, but the fact that Gainax played up his personality and bravado to such an insane degree made the viewers focus more on him, making his death all the more dramatic and surprising to most viewers.
