How was Steins;Gate received on /a/ while it was currently airing?

Or is there anyone left in this worldline of /a/ that even remembers that far back?

The absolute worst Mayuri death for me was the one where the little girl ran to to surprise her and was like "Mayuri-chan!" and tripped and pushed her in front of the train because Mayuri died and the girl immediately blamed herself and probably went crazy. I'm happy as hell he left that worldline.

I liked the movie, but not the series that much.

So it's a shame that the movie doesn't work at all as a stand alone.

Was it ever explained why Okarin had that vision where he was 70 million years in the past and then Mayuri was there too and spoke to him and told him they were both going to die there but their other versions will keep existing so in a way they will keep existing.

Was it just some artifact of sending his memory back in time so many times that maybe some echo got bounced to there?

Also it was fucked that Mayuri remembered all her deaths. Kurisu only had dim memories of one death and was kind of traumatized by it. Mayuri had memories of hundreds of different deaths and all kinds of different horrible ways, even if she was confused about it and just thought they were dreams.

It's sort of explained in Steins;Gate Zero where Mayuri and Suzuha end up getting sent to an unknown time after the Russians destroy the time machine right before they were about to leap. Okabe then goes back in time to look for them, which could explain why he has memories of that in the first place.
Though, I'm not sure if they were planning that far ahead when they wrote S;G, so they might have just intended for it to be a surreal dream just to add an unsettling atmosphere to the VN.
>>
What's Steins;Gate 0 exactly? Why would you make something sad like that?
Or is it the timeline that had to happen for future Okabe to be able to send a video to himself in the first place?
Time is confusing
>>
>>158978906
It's the bundle of timelines that had to exist so that Okabe could send the video to himself.

You can use it in a sentence, but it is certainly redundant. Even when used as emphasis, it just comes off as wordy and details an air of unrealized pretension. Although, if two distinct and separate events had happened in the past it would then give direction or prominence worthy of emphasis, in that case I would use concurrent though, since it lacks that the ambiguous tense.

This ranking is actually undeniable fact.

Steins;Gate holds the best anime to date, mostly because it works really well in an anime format. It was fantastic all the way through. The other entries were unfortunate and their stories can never properly be told in the anime format, thus being shitty.

As for VNs, Chaos;Child is the best VN to date. I can't deny that. It was a real ride all the way to the end. That doesn't mean all the other entries weren't good though, because they're all amazing VNs, but some are just better than the others.

It was very well received, but its popularity lead it to becoming the target of a lot of shitposting. I even remember some faggot trying to force a "conflict" between Durararafags and Steins;Gatefags. It was pretty sad.

My favourite moment when the anime was airing was when people started posting that Jelly mayuri in an attempt to spoil the anime, not realising that mayuri doesn't actually get jellied in the VN.
>>
>>158980219

Wait, so she deliberately pushed Mayuri in front of that train, and just acted like it was an accident? That's fucked.
>>
>>158990442
It has been years since I last re-read the VN, but this is a different worldline. Basically after Braun killed himself Nae got taken in by the rounders. She went batshit insane and stole the D-Mail machine and repeatedly d-mailed herself back in time over and over until she found Okabe.
>>
>>158990560

Ahh so it was like a 20 year old murderous insane Nae in the body of child Nae. Okay I see.
>>
>>158990771
They never explain how she has constant access to the time leap machine for such a long period of time. You'd think at one point she'd be too young to infiltrate SERN to use it at some points during her travels.
>>
>>158990963
I just assumed she kept breaking in to steal it over and over. In this worldline Nae was one of the most skilled rounders, and she had memories of the future to use to her advantage.
>>
If SERN had an operative (Braun) living below Okarin monitoring him and renting his apt to him then they already knew Okarin was working on time travel before he ever sent the first D-Mail. So even deleting that D-mail doesn't really seem to solve it like it does in the anime, unless they just never work on anything related to time and I guess never rise above a certain threshold of threat level and so SERN just monitors them forever without doing anything to them?
>>
>>158983107
I think just stating the changes made to the story is an understatement. C;H's main strength isn't in its narrative, it's in how interesting a protagonist Takumi is and the dark atmosphere that is created by being trapped in his thoughts. Which not a single scene in the anime, not even the ones adaptated straight from the VN, captures at all. Takumi is pretty much just a blank slate in the anime with none of his interesting narration being present, and every scene feels flat with no atmosphere at all.
>>
>>158978766

Considering that plans for Robotics DaSH were in the works since Steins;Gate Phenogram, I wouldn't put it past Chiyo and his wild ride.
>>
>>158978906

If you've seen the anime or played the VN, you should know that one failure was necessary to achieve S;G.
>>

>>

>>
I would always try and save both, but I feel like if I was stuck in a timeline where there was no possible way to save both Mayuri and Kurisu and I have to choose one I save Kurisu. Because Kurisu is like a super-genius incredibly capable adult human while Mayuri is a kind of permanently childlike not fully developed mentally human who is so forgetful that she drops a metal uppa that I literally just bought her like ten seconds ago down the stairs right beside the vending machine and doesn't notice she dropped it until fifteen minutes later and says "where's my uppa?" meanwhile Kurisu is doing complex 4th dimensional quantum equations in her head and designing literal time machines.

It was a Japanese meme, with spoon meaning friend and fork meaning lover. She got embarrassed over telling someone she was lonely and wanted a boyfriend.

Of course, later on additional backstory was written where she received a spoon from her father on her 10th birthday and then never received a fork to go along with it on her subsequent birthday because of their falling out. The meme is what it was actually written as at the time though.
>>
>>158995546

If I was teaching English to a non-speaker I would tell them to take it out simply because it's redundant. Because just saying "while he was climbing Mount Everest" has the exact same meaning without having that word in there. But while it is misused as you said, I wouldn't say it's totally wrong. At one time after all, in May 1953, he was currently climbing Mount Everest, and that's the time period we are discussing. Just like S;G was currently airing 6 years ago.

I loved the series and the visual novel but I hated the movie so that's understandable.
And I do agree that the d-mail reversal of some of the girls* like faris and lukako could have recieved some better treatment.
Still, it's almost unanimously agreed upon that the ending worked out quite well, as predictable as it might have been for people who watched the series.
Watching the anime instead of playing the visual novel makes the ending more predictable because the first episode is fresh in your mind, you sorta forget about the events that transpired in radio kaikan the further you go in the VN so the twist is more spectacular, that really makes the difference between the person thinking it's an asspull or a brilliant plot twist.

I've been in the shitposting business long enough to know how it works, trust me.
>>
>>158998722
My point is mostly just that it's an immature genre. There aren't people writing VNs who have the talent of a lot of people writing anime and manga. It's a very cliche ridden medium that mostly relies on tropes from young adult fiction to form the foundation for it's narratives and characters.

For me, the average Vn is probably about as good as the average light novel, or teen-fiction book. If you're into that thing, it can be good campy fun, they aren't anything offensive to me. They're just kind of trashy, like soap operas or wrestling, or most anime that airs nowadays for that matter.
>>
>>158998767
Umineko is a VN.

SN, just like Kinetic Novel, is a name devs use when they want to make their work feel special.

Also the ending was shit, but so are some of Shakespeare's I guess.
>>
>>158998844

>>
>>158998905
The average manga or anime are only just as good as your average VN or LN, they're the same talent, spread through different media.

Romeo Tanaka is one of my favorite writers and he has worked in all the different media.
>>
>>158998948
But that only means you were wrong anon, as you should always doubt your claims unless you have deep knowledge about something (and even then).

Making a statement like "ALL VNs are garbage" is just showing ignorance, it's the same as saying "ALL anime is trash" or "ALL manga is shit", just stupid generalization.
>>
>>158998905
Im not sure what's trashy and generic about one of the few time-travel stories that actually bothered to establish (mostly) respected mechanics that had (somewhat) coherent explanations and built up a cast interesting enough to keep you worried about them.

People working on VNs do have plenty of talent, the brilliant way the start and the end tied together still makes me tear up sometimes, and the music produced for it is nothing short of spectacular.

Deep knowledge is a very subjective term. Going around second-guessing every opinion you have out of some sense of obligatory objectiveness sounds tedious and facile.
>>
>>158999261
I was wrong, I never denied that.
The reason I got around to playing Steins;Gate is because I eventually got around to doubting my claims in the first place, otherwise I would have never played it.
>>
>>158999361
It's not about second guessing your decisions, it's about knowing that unless you have proof or a demonstration, you could always be wrong, so you shouldn't parade your opinion like absolute truth.

Specially when it's a stupid generalization that wouldn't endure under any kind of analysis.

Hell, tell me one that's as good as 3-gatsu no Lion or Uzumaki and I'll be impressed.
You can't though, because there may be some VNs that are decent for their medium, their medium is so inherently based on pandering that they are still fairly uncreative in almost every way. The character designs and dialogue in particular are usual complete lowest common demoninator, I'll give Steins;Gate that, the VN has good character design. Particularly for a VN.
>>
>>158999501
Even Shakespeare's fiercest rival at the time (Ben Johnson) wrote of how jealous he was of Shakespeare's "effortless "wit." His plays were beyond popular with the people and were the first works of a living playwright to be collected and bound as a single work. The issue was more that theater in general had a very low standing in public and artistic opinion, something Shakespeare had a large part in changing.
>>
>>158999529
>text messages to the past change someone's gender
This video deals with that, im not sure why it's in 360º, skip forward to the relevant section.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB3SJtH8Bz8

>banana in a microwave jumps between world-lines
It did not jump between world-lines, it got compressed in a singularity and got spit out in the past, changing the world-line by a tiny ammount. The entire world changes world-lines, not the banana, or okabe, or any observer.

>only one person can remember
Even the anime mentions the fact that everyone has reading steiner, it's just stronger in some people and weaker in others. Suzuha, Faris, Lukako, and even Kurisu experience it in some way or another that allows the plot to progress, wtihout their reading steiner the steins;gate would have never been reached, so Okabe is not the "Chosen One"

>arbritarily defined events are treated as major points of contingency
The seemingly insane ways in which she dies are not the result of a normal course of events, it's the result of someone trying to intefere with those events. In other words, the more you try to stop a point in covergence the less likely and the weirder the death that occurs, since the world has to accomodate for new circumstances presented by someone who knows the future. As an example, if Okabe is destined to die in 2025, even if you strapped explosives to him fully checked for their correct operation, they would never detonate unless Okabe had a chance of making it out alive. This means that stuff gets really weird.
It's also stated that the world-line slightly changes when Okabe time leaps, so other people are taken into account when this change occurs, even if it's not displayed in the divergence meter.

>they manage to break tenusously defined rules
The movie is not canonical, it was garbage in my opinion, and it did break lots of rules.
And im not sure later episodes ever broke rules regarding time-travel.

See, you're still making dumb generalizations, it's like all you know are fucking nukige eroge.

You ask for originality like GitS is actually original (even though it's a masterpiece, it's not). You talk about pandering when most anime and manga are entrenched in pandering too.

Some anon already mentioned Umineko, Ever 17 and you could include S;G in there, as it's one of the best time travel stories in general. I'm sure there is more, and just like every other media, it's all up to personal taste. I like Planetarian, and yet someone can come and call it shit, that's just how media is.

Also 3-gatsu no Lion is shit, for example (and this is not being salty, I legitimately don't like it, but I did like Honey and Clover).

You're trying to compare completely different media, with different approaches. The closest you can get to VNs are actual novels, not anime or manga which are visually oriented media, while in VNs visuals and audio only provide the ambience for the writing.
>>
>>158999686
See, he was never intending to have a discussion, he jut wanted to call VNs shit and parade his "superior" taste, asking for you to "prove" that VNs are "deserving" of his chance, like his opinion actually matters.

>I explained my complaints with the writing conventions, character designs, and S;G in particular fairly clearly.
Yes, and when you were told you were making a generalization and that you were absolutely wrong with your perception of the medium, you basically said that you didn't care and proceeded to repeat the same argument, and asked for "proof", like we owe you something.

You're not even willing to give VNs a chance, that much is obvious, now fuck off.
>>

I remember all the fucking /v/ fags that were all over the board spamming the place with threads. I can remember there being 20 Steins;Gate threads up at once, and they were full to the brim with cancerous /v/ memes.

I've read Nekopara and got far enough into Fate/Stay Night and S;G to know I wasn't going to enjoy finishing them. So that's enough of a chance for me.
>you were told you were making a generalization and that you were absolutely wrong with your perception of the medium
Funny enough, it takes more than me being told "you're wrong" for me to change my mind. VNs have not moved beyond the realm of young adult fiction, and are immature as a medium. There's nothing wrong with liking VNs (hell, I just watched all of Twin Angel and Hinako Note, and they're far worse than most VNs mentioned in this thread I'm sure) but I don't see the need for anyone to act like they're interesting from a literary or artistic standpoint. It just seems like you're deluding yourself into thinking you're partaking in some sort of "inherently valuable" experience rather than just being entertained.

I think you should've said this in the first place instead of "all VNs are garbage", because that's an actual argument ( a rather snobby one, but an argument nonetheless) instead of just shitposting.

And you're wrong, but if you can't accept that as an argument from someone that has read more than you, and you won't give VNs a try other than the most entry level ones (and seriously nekopara is shit, why are you reading that), then there is nothing we can do here. Go away now.

I don't give a shit what it was when it was airing. The fact is, these threads are the most popular among redditors save for maybe KonoSuba and One Piece.

I like S;G, but I'd rather not discuss it at all rather than do it with r/anime shiteater newfaggots. If you actually have been here long enough to have witnessed the original threads and still approve of this shit, I sincerely hope you get tortured to death and I fucking mean it.
>>
>>159002065
Steins;Gate has enough depth and relevance to still have interesting things to discuss about it. Stop trying to blame every thread you don't like on reddit.
You are just another example of the cancerous horde mentality in /a/ these days.
>>
>>159002143
Oh, I've been to these threads for long enough m8. People are literally admitting to being from Reddit and defending it, just check the archives.

These threads should be banned here and moved to /vg/ so they can be with all the other invader scum.
>>
>>158982026
>Dude, I am so dark and so gay.
Probably.
>>
>>159002065
>>159002216

Interesting. So even though you admit the anime was extremely popular on /a/ when it was airing, now because many people from reddit also like it you want it banned.

What would you do if reddit started liking your favorite food? Start eating sauerkraut instead and telling everyone how much you love it?
>>
>>159002216
Im not going to defend Reddit, but I think at this point most people don't even remember why they hate Reddit. Everything bad is blamed on outsiders or other communities, when in reality the problem is the inherent stupidity of some people browsing this website that think horde mentality is a good thing.

The problem is them refusing to even attempt to adhere to the board culture. Well that and
>le shaman grills xD
>why is x so why?
>I wanna x y
>but he's a guy haha

These funni maymays were spammed for more than a year now. Not only that, but these threads would often essentially be picture dumps due to lack of discussion, which is against the rules.

Walk the line or fuck off. I'm not going to stop. I will never tolerate open redditry here, even if literally everyone else does.
>>
>>159002411
Of course you are a fucking redditor. We have nothing to talk about.
>>
>>159002541

So a meme or question that was amusing in a S;G thread on /a/ when the series was airing was fine, but the same question or meme now is verboten because people on reddit have since adopted those memes or asked similar questions. Even if they are identical.

This is fascinating, so for you it's as if they transfer through some sort of Meme;Gate.
>>
>>159002541
Stop using the word literally like that, that's not how it works.

>>159002600
Instead of responding to what i've said you are just going to ignore that and start name-calling. How original.
>>
>>159002541

Have you ever liked a band, but then when they got really popular started hating them because "plebs" started listening to them? Like even the songs you used to love, even though the songs didn't change, now you can't stand them?
>>
>>159002678
Actually memes are a way of identity signalling, which is crucial for anonymous image boards as it's one of the few ways to maintain cohesion in an anonymous environment. Consequently, when outsiders adopt a meme, it becomes useless and it's use must be punished.

>>159002679
I don't owe you a response you retarded sperg. Go back to r/fedora_tippers if you want to have a debate.
>>
>>158975526
People loved the anime, and this notion that the anime was bad only started to come in when the VN translation was starting to trickle in.

It's still a pretty good adaptation in its own right.
>>
>>159002877
I still love S;G. I just hate you. So fuck off.

By the way, I'd like to thank everyone who responded so far for confirming that these are redditshit threads. No /a/ native would ever get this defensive over being called a redditor.

Ahh, I see. So for you once a meme passes a certain threshold of popularity and becomes popular outside of your in-group, you feel that the meme should be banned. Even if it was still popular and still enjoyed locally. So when others adopt and begin to use the meme, the meme itself to you becomes unclean, even if the content and structure of the actual meme itself has not changed. It has been profaned.

Alright, I concede that it's theoretically possible, although very unlikely. Also unlikely still that her appearance would still be so identical that Okabe wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Also Luka's parents still gave him the same name regardless of gender, I just realized that. Kind of interesting .

>>159005893
>Also unlikely still that her appearance would still be so identical that Okabe wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
True, but when you consider that the reason for male Luka's appearance in the first place is the fact that his family treats him as if he were a girl, it does make a bit more sense.
>>
>>159005893

When children are intersex doctors encourage their parents to give them gender neutral names so that when later in life when they decide which gender they are going to commit to they don't have to change names. etc. It's why someone like Jamie Lee Curtis had the name she does.
