Mimi is a hard question. There is a lot of good things in her yet she is a weak point in the story structure. Mimi was from the director's vision, but the writers didn't really know how to properly handle it. In fact it was quite telling that this show had nobody on the series composition post, meaning that ultimately the director was responsible for the story structure yet he was really not someone good at writing a story because all he knew was pumping out genga like a machine and reading psychoanalysis in his off-time which doesn't make him a good writer. So, in the process he could use some help from the writers but the help was not that great and he didn't get more writers.

The question is how to approach the portrayal of Mimi and not annoy the audience because apparently the audience now are pretty disgusted by the family drama, which they have had enough with their own families.

There is some fundamental conflict in the director's vision. He wants to explore some horrendously terrifying themes - oedipal conflicts and others - in an apparently wholesome way. It's not possible. He has to pick one next time.

Where did Flip Flappers go so wrong?

It was a huge disappointment for me. The plot dissolved a few episodes from the end, the characters were never properly developed, and the fun adventure setting turned into a nonsensical metaphor for ~something or other~. Not to mention the plot points that were dropped, such as the senpai who painted, or why the research was taking place, or who exactly the weird albino kids were...

It turned from pure illusion into pure garbage.

Iro's arc was already finished. She changed for the better. Allowing her to move on meant she could enjoy her passion and still have friends and a happy life.
Cocona's quick interpretation of her change as a bad one is meant to show more of her than Iro.

I missed the threads while it was airing.

I felt like the show was either too short or too long.

Lots of characters, especially the Amorphous Children, felt really skeletal. Nyunyu takes the prize for this. And, frankly, I really liked when the other two showed that they looked up to Yayaka in spite of things. Speaking of Yayaka, I would have liked to see all three of the girls work together more. Then, on top of characters was the two organizations themselves as well.

On the other hand, because of how bare a lot of things were left, they would have been easy to cut down on to the point they probably could have made a movie or OVA out of.

As both of these seemed like better alternatives, it makes the story come off as pretty disjointed or half-hearted. The characters were fun enough, and the visuals were great. I can even dig the ideas presented,. The boat symbolism was something that hit close to home for me. But, the way there were sold the series short. I hadn't known about the writer switch until recently, so I'm guessing that's a huge part of the issue.

It's interesting you said that. When you're looking for adventures you want everything disjointed and half-hearted, but when you're looking for stories it's the opposite.
I don't think they had the people to write really good stories. They opted for mediocre stories with amazing settings. They could have made it more revolutionary and experimental, but the director had to play safe.

This didn't blow Madoka out of the water in the sense that this show failed to appeal to the masses, which is simple enough as a matter of fact. Madoka was an AAA production. They knew what the audience want and appealed to it. FLFL was an experimental auteur production. It had more sharp edges but one would only learn to realize how shallow Madoka was by finishing FLFL.

Yup, Bu-chan's design was absolutely inspired by Niel R Jones' work, the outward design of course is half of it, but the brain inside seals the deal.
I'm also convinced the curiosity rover is another key inspiration for his design, mainly the wheels and his one eye of course. Fits his prying, curious nature as well.

First 2/3rds are really fun, amazing visuals wise and the characters were ok even if it had no solid story. It all goes to shit when plot kicks in, best aspects of the show get cast away for a convoluted tale that wasnt needed at all. Should have gone with a simpler plot and keep focusing on what it was best at. Sometimes aiming high and fucking up royally is worse than nailing mediocrity, even if the attempt is appreciated.

I can't help but feel like her circumstances ought to have had a big impact on her but we don't really get to see much of Papika's internal world or private thoughts throughout the show since it's mostly shown from Cocona's eyes.

Do we know how the whole Papikana -> Papika thing worked?
It always bothered me that she seemed to know things from her past life, like how to forage for food. I know they implied she had a full-reset in an interview, but it really makes me wonder how much of Papika's behaviour early on, especially in the first 4 episodes, was relating to her backstory. Like she doesn't remember where she learned to do something, but knows how to do it, or feels compelled to behave a certain way even though she doesn't remember why. Maybe she really was just substituting Cocona for Mimi at first, and grew to love her as her own person over time. Maybe her pushy-outgoing nature was just her compensating for the low self-worth lab life instilled. Maybe she saw Uexkull as food because part of her still remembered a time when she lived off of hunting rabbits while on the run with a pregnant Mimi.

It seems weird to imagine all these things not being somehow related to her past life.

He's right, think about it for a second.
Cocona isn't dressed like a punk girl, but she has the personality of one. Those outfits are akways a poser thing, the person wearing it isn't some tough badass, they're shy, insecure and feeling empty. They have no identity and that terrifies them, but they're too afraid to act so they cover their insecurities on cheap eyeliner from Claire's and fashion that they think makes them look more like the cool person they wish they could be. Cocona flashes her little chuuni streak a couple times throughout the show, particularly when henshined, but normally hides it because she's afraid to let herself show through.

She's also terrible at being a girl and acts awkwardly around feminine stuff. Her femininity comes naturally, but she's obviously not comfortable with it, and doesn't really think of herself that way. It's sort of a natural thing that just shines through, but that she fails at miserably when she actually tries. She doesn't yet really understand her femininity as being part of who she is and not some act on television, which once again ties back to her lack of identity and feelings of emptiness.

Lets face it, if Cocona didn't go to a japanese school with mandatory uniforms and dress code, she'd probably dress like Avril Lavigne.
