Someone mentioned this in the last thread, can anyone clarify if Sensei was trying to convince Nidaime to give up on his waifu in order to prevent a broken heart or were they fighting over who gets to tap that? My respect for Akadama hangs in the balance.

I know there are novelfags in these threads.

>>
>>158954289
No way, having him walk off with Kaisei as the last scene is a huge change from having him go crawl back to the Benten at the end, reducing the impression that she might still have some part to play. Benten got relegated to the roll call of resolution visitations by Yasaburo, then he declares he is engaged to Kaisei after luring her to join his tsuchinoko hunting squad.

But he didn't crawl back. He went to comfort her and give her pity while she feels sorry for herself. I'm a Kaiseifag but the Benten scene should have been the last one, Benten still does have a part to play in the 3rd book.

He is the called the Second for that reason, should also have a normal name like Akadama, but they never say it.
>>

All I could thinking during this scene was "Benten getting BTFO a third time incoming".
>>
>>158954813
>Benten still does have a part to play in the 3rd book
Probably, unless they consulted Morimi before making the change. It seems likely that it's a mistake on their part that goes hand in hand with rushing through the ending, but for now all we can do is reflect on how BTFO Benten was in the anime.
>>
>>158955118
Akadama's name is Nyoigatake, so is Nidaime's.
>>
>>158954289
Closing the anime with Kaisei actually makes it seem like she was the most important, the last episode is even named after the red fur of fate in reference to Kaisei and Yasaburo relationship.
>>
>>158954215
she even fell for it, nidaime is a true gentleman
>>
I don't like how pathetic and human Nidaime and Benten were in this episode. I spent twentysometing episodes with them being built as gods, especially Benten, and it ends with her being btfo to the point of being no more a credible power, no matter what she does from now on, and Nidaime will forever be associated with the coward hidden behind a bunch of tanuki with a bottle like a coward drunkard.

I know this is completely subjective, it's not a real criticism, but I don't think I will bother with a season 3 if it ever happens. Unless the tanuki race get the genocide it deserves.
>>
>>158954576

>I don't like how pathetic and human Nidaime and Benten were in this episode
But that's the entire point silly.
>>
>>158955410
>with them being built as gods
Quite the contrary, Benten was introduced as a god and slowly being built down as fragile, that's a thing on both seasons.
>>
>>158955450

>>
>>158954289

>>
>>158953814

>>
>>158955561
In the first episode Benten kisses Yasaburo, leaving ice on his mouth.
Then in a recent episode you could see her walking and freezing everything in her path.
>>
>>158955497
I know, it doesn't mean I have to like it. I don't know, it's like the author wrote a grim and "dirty" version of a superhero to show me he's human.
He can do that, there is objectively nothing wrong with it, but I don't like it.

>>158955545
She was built as fragile but never as pathetic. When Yasaburo "betrays" her picking Nidaime, she is hurt, but she's never pathetic. When Nidaime btfo her before, she's not pathetic, just defeated.
And I would have accepted Benten being brought down to the rank of human if Nidaime didn't come down with her.

And again, the author is right, this is something I simply don't like subjectively.
>>
>>158955187
That was my point, Nyoigatake Yakushibo the first is Akadama, while Nyoigatake Yakushibo the second was Nidaime (as in the Second), so he too should have a normal name like Akadama but it's never stated.
>>
>>158953814
I thought I remembered people saying the Nidaime was "adopted" like Benten but that never came up so I guess he's his real son?
>>
>>158955820
I would say that while Nidaime did have a temper tantrum, you can clearly see that he gets over it and moves on while maturing. Meanwhile, Benten is still bedridden and totally pathetic, so the two weren't really brought down to the same level.
>>
>>158955827
isn't Akadama a nickname

Nidaime doesn't need one, everyone calls him Nidaime
>>
>>158955977
I thought it was more like his "human name", but yeah everybody calls the Nidaime with that name either way.
>>
>>158955410
I'm really bothered about how the tengu subplot went nowhere beyond "wait for the next installment for any this to matter". Nidaime turned out to be an angry crybaby because Akadama stopped him from meeting his gf before the train left so she crossed him, Benten got BTFO once, got back on her feet just to go mopping because her hair burnt and Akadama sat on is ass telling others to do better while he's still unable to fly.

Hopefully some bookfag can confirm that the adaptation butchered all this shit up.
>>
>>158955883
That theory was bullshit from day one, in episode 01 you can see his wings, he's a Tengu.

>>
>>158955883
He's not Akadama's real son. If the third book is really about the tengu succession then it's better that they leave it for the next season.

It didn't come up explicitly but Nidaime did say he won't become a tengu. If he was a real son/tengu then he wouldn't have said that because it implies you can unbecome a tengu to become one again.
>>
>>158956057
Benten has been left as an unresolved character since S1 anon, on S1 we saw a glimpse of emotions beyond being a diva, on S2 we saw her being completely broken down to the point she is pitied by a tanuki.
3rd book will settle the issue, remember this is meant to be a trilogy.

>mfw they showed us why Nidaime hates Benten

>>
Theory time:
Benten is the Nidaime's secret daughter.

Hear me out, Benten's mother was the woman in the twelfth episode, she left Kyoto without telling the Nidaime she was pregnant and raised Benten all alone, Benten hated her father for abandoning her mother so in her world the clock tower of the hotel the two met is underwater

That would explain why Akadama abducted a random human girl that, unbeknownst to him, had the potential to become a tengu. She simply was the next in succession with the Nidaime away.

The age gap probably doesn't matter, it seems the two met in the 30s but the series could be set from the 70s to the 90s, and since Benten would LITERALLY be a half-tengu as Kaisei calls her, she could also age more slowly than normal humans.

>>
>>158957972
We saw how deeply he cared for and how well he took care of his possessions. Having a train crashing through the window and destroying it all probably hurt. There's also a lot of implicit reasoning to be gleaned from the narrative. For example, Nidaime surrounds himself with human items from when he was young and in love--they clearly represent his desire to not be a tengu. He's likely held onto them all for ages as well, and they're likely a connection to his past as a human. As for why he was in the tanuki pile with a bottle of booze, it was probably just a small joke to make the upcoming dramatic scenes have more oomph while still indicating that he had reached his breaking point.

I got totally wasted just to watch this episode.

I DEMAND SPIN-OFF. There has to be a side story on Benten and Nidaime.

Anyways, I get that Akadama came to see Nidaime and said nothing special because he wanted to be there for his son, but didn't had anything to say, but there is still a necessity for clarification on why Nidaime fought for a lady that looked just like Benten who was he was obviously a human. Akadama kept Benten close to him at first because he felt guilt that Benten looked just like the Nidaime's love who he destroyed the relationship of, but felt love with her right? And I guess Benten was pissed at Nidaime because she figured that Akadama only picked her up and became the entirety of her life just because she looked like someone she isn't. And Benten needed someone to blame and Nidaime seemed just the good target because he is the root of the issue. wtf why Am I explaining my own question

The scene where Yasaburo goes to the Ebisugawa dwelling is different in the novel.

He wasn't about to leave and got surprised by Kaisei in front of her brothers. Yasaburo goes over because he heard Kaisei had woken up. Kureichiro is leading Yasaburo towards Kaisei's room and tells Yasaburo that Kaisei has been genki and saying rude things at him and wonders what she ate to become like this because she was a very cute furball before he left, Yasaburo laughs.

He enters her bedroom alone and turns back into a tanuki when he lays eyes on her furry form. He pulls back the curtain to let the light in and calls her to wake up, when she hears him she goes "kyaa" and burrows into her futon and angrily asks him what he's doing there. When he says Kureichiro let him in Kaisei goes off about how he can do this to his unmarried sister, it's not ok just because they're engaged and also "kutabare!" She then pokes out from the futon to look at him and they say "happy new year" to each other. She doesn't remember anything so Yasaburo sits on her bed and tells her everything, then the lines about how Soun is having ramen with Tenyama in hell now. When he says he's leaving because he's busy, Kaisei doesn't tell him to "hurry up and leave" like in the anime, she just calmly says she won't shoo him away when he comes again.

I didn't get some things about Benten and the Nidaime. Why did Benten hated him so much? She started every fight. Did she just want to prove herself the strongest?

Nidaime was also a bit hard to grasp. He had his English waifu, Akadama prevented him from seeing him and because of that, the Nidaime fucked off to England and gave up being a Tengu. Did he return to Kyoto just because he found out about Benten? His explosion before the fight was also a bit hard to understand, his disposition took a complete 180. I suppose the house was him hanging on to old memories, and Akadama wanted him to move on? But in the end, the house is being remodeled, and the Nidaime still acts like an "englishman".

Yasaburo said he wasn't good enough for Benten, but it's clear that he's the only one that makes her life interesting and fun. She's always going on about being lonely and bored, and Yasaburo seemed the perfect match. But apparently not. I really don't understand her relationship with the Nidaime.

IWe got a resolution to Niidaime, why they fought as well as seeing him and his father kinda make up. The "I will not become a tengu" shows that in someways he's not completely denouncing being a tengu. He's lessened the distance between him and tengu a bit which was sweet. Jyurojin, Tenmaya, and Benten are biggest mysteries and hopefully we get more on them next season. But I feel overall this wrapped up a lot of threads it introduced and was satisfying in a lot of ways

>>158959490
Did the bedroom scene happen before or after reinstatement of their engagement? I would have loved to see this scene, though seeing Yasaburo and Kaisei canon was the best.

We don't know why Benten hates Niidaime, but Niidaime hates Benten probably because he reminds me of a love once past that he lost due to Sensei and him fighting, and she does messes with everything of his. Not to mention she was the one who crashed the train into his house, ruining all the things that are very precious to him.

I hope S3 talks a lil about the Devil King Cedar Incident

Love how the conclusion didn't even really come down to the hotpot. Last season the hotpot was a big part of both the last episodes, this time it was a problem in episode one but it got resolved rather quickly. On that note, what the fuck happened to Jyurojin?

You know, now I think of it, I think Ben10 just wanted to hear "help me Benten" from Yasaburo when he was about to turn into a hotpot.
She wanted a "reason" to sidetrack from the objective her unattractive ambition led her and find someone to get truly attached to. Yasaburo for some reason refused to become her excuse to become blind to her disorderly emotions. Fool's blood, he says, but in a sense, Yasaburo is just a stubborn kid who didn't wanted to see Benten turn weak.
>>
>>158964216
Well, that was because Yasaburo had already decided he couldn't help Benten. That's why he abandons her at the end of the season.

Or there's always the possibility that you just have shit taste

How can you even compare Tatami Galaxy and Uchouten Kazoku? They have completely different styles and focus on completely different objectives.

Tatami Galaxy set in a university with an MC that's navigating various university clubs. The show focuses on the interesting and awkward social situations and social groups. Most of the time the MC barely is engages in the situations and runs away.

Uchouten focuses heavily on characters. The plot is simple and sometimes cliche but the plot is just there to bring out the character's emotions. Uchouten's characters are well defined.

Two very different shows

"If you're frustrated, grow stronger" is one of my favorite lines in the show
>>
>>158967620
Akadama actually had some really good character development this season. Well maybe development is the wrong word, perhaps his character was just fleshed out more.

In S1 he was just an old fart with a boner for Benten, in S2 he got a chance to show off his wisdom and play the "old man role" ushering in the new generation. The scene with Benten in the river, the one where he helps Yaichirou and Gyoukuran hook up, and the one with the Nidaime this episode were all highly enjoyable and made me respect him more.

It's just one bit of side information that they didn't include in the anime. In the novel he's kidnapped in the Meiji area.

>you can see his wings
Any random kid like Benten that gets picked up off the street can gain the power of flight/super strength/wind manipulation/ice generation but if they sprout wings once the only explanation is that they're a biological tengu?

The most telling feature of a natural tengu is a Jew nose and Nidaime doesn't even have that.

We don't know, neither do novel fags.

The house had all of his human belongings, it was representative of him holding onto his past from 100 years ago and all his belongings burning is symbolic for him moving on past his original love and hate of being a tengu.

He came back because seeing Benten reminded him of his past and his fight over that woman with Akadama. Most likely he wanted to make up with his father but had way too much pride to do it until the ending.

They really didn't even attempt to explain how Soun survived? "He was just pretending" is not an explanation. Nigger got fucking shot and "died" in front of his own daughter. For this to be some kind of epic a ruse means at some point Kaisei had to have just fucked off leaving her father's body to rot in the middle of the fucking woods and never went back. It also means not one of the other tanuki found it strange that he's supposedly dead, yet even though two others were with him when he died, there was no body. Him coming back didn't even change anything either. Other than bringing Yajiro back to the city five minutes after he left and some rather pointless drama. As soon he revealed himself he immediately got dragged into hell as collateral damage with Tenmaya. It seems like the only point of this was to try and make him seem sympathetic because he "cared" about Kaisei. Despite the fact he faked his own death in front of her without a single fuck given.

She caused all of this herself. Yasaburou may have set up a couple situations, but Benten's pride and unwillingness to back down were her undoing. It's not like he purposely set her up to get wrecked.
>>
I'm glad they placed this scene at the end, rather than after the scene in which Yasaburou got to see Kaisei again. The scene was a great way to this part of the story.

I think the LN ended with Yasaburou's visit to Benten, and while I understand the significance of that visit, I don't think that scene had nearly as much impact as Yasaburou and Kaisei reinstating their engagement.
>>
>>158969604
still, Yasaboru clearly went to ask Naidame for help a lot of times, knowing that Benten and Sensei will get angry about it, specially when looking for a tengu to oversee the trick magister thing

That's why I'm asking.
I love my happy ends, but I have no problem with moe SoL, but having a good story makes everything better and that seems so incredibly rare in anime now.
>>

>>
>>158970814
that wasnt what I mean, not all.

My problem with moe SoLs is that they dont have much going for them than the moe, moe that has been used on countless similar shows, if they have comedy, the comedy is weak, using tired jokes; characters tend to follow strongly define archetypes and rarely develop more than what the archetype is, making most characters clones from each others, instead of having more distinctive personalities, even the character designs are similar

My main problem with Moe SoL is how it suffers of oversaturation as a genre and how little they do to appart each show from the rest.
>>
>>158970617
Yeah, Kyoto people really like Uchouten Kazoku.
>>
>>158971162
>characters tend to follow strongly define archetypes
I agree this is a big problem for moe stuff, given that the characters are pretty much the only important thing in them; I doubt the creators don't know though, it's probably harder than it looks creating characters that don't behave like the usual ones without turning it into your usual great comedy that somehow no one buys
>>
>>158971375
While creating characters is hard, and following archetypes can make the process of making them easier, my problem is that they are gigantic clones of each other

Ok, I can understand that people likes tsunderes, but I think there is many ways to show how character can be tsundere more than "I am not helping you because I like you or something! Baka!" and everthing you can get from that phrase alone.

Call me a retard but after two seasons of this I still don't understand Yasaburo and Benten's relationship. Are they like kindred spirits? Where does their distant affection for each other come from? Do they see an characteristic ideal in the other person? Are they just two sides of the same coin of freedom-loving eccentrics?

I'm too autistic for this shit.
>>
>>158983016
Yasaburo loves Benten but he knows he's not good enough for her, after all he's just a tanuki. Benten likes Yasaburo and cares for him, because he's the only one who could come close to her, everyone else is too scared of her. Sadly, Yasaburo as well is scared of her and, while she loves her, he can't ignore the fact he's a tanuki and that she ate his dad.
>>

how in the fuck did Akadama confort him

>>
>>158983236
Tengu things, you don't understand.
>>
>>158962057
I'd say with Benten, it was a mix of probably being looked down on by him, like during London, and probably something else we don't know. People have made theories about Benten and her mother or grandmother being NIidaime's lover, so that could tie into it. We probably won't completely know until S2.

Now Niidaime, he was in love with someone, Akadama said it was too early for him to be in love with some women, and Niidaime said I LOVE HER, BACK OFF BITCH. They fought and essentially Akadama disowned his son. He tried to see his waifu off, and she had left and prety much dumped him. He grew to hate Benten due to her reminding him of his ex-waifu, but also she did everything she could to get on his nerves.

His getting mad during that scene was due to him losing his fruniture, which seems to be something very important. As some other anons said, it's his way of connecting with the past, and probably cherished memories, whether they be of his love or of a happier or more fond time. Losing those pushed him over the edge, and especially with Benten, it just made him boil over. Akadama wasn't wanting him to move on, his words there were his way of comfort. He was telling his son to get stronger if he's upset, just like with Benten. This was to show that even though they had fought, the distance or feud between them was fading away. Especially with the line "I will not become a tengu" instead of "I am not a Tengu"

Yasaburo isn;t good enough for Benten because he is a tanuki and she is a Human-Tengu. He enjoys her company and is infatuated, and does make things fun, but we've seen various times that he does fear her still. Benten needs someone who can be her equal and push her, as well as see her loneliness and understand her. The only one I feel that can do that and probably will is the Niidaime.
>>
>>158983568
>Especially with the line "I will not become a tengu" instead of "I am not a Tengu"
Honestly I think that was simply because of how Yasaburo worded his praise, but I don't understand Japanese well enough to argue this.
>>
>>158983236
Same way he comforted Benten when she fell during the airship event. It's just how Akadama do things. Plus, it's the first non-insulting thing Akadama said to Nidaime ever since he returned to Kyoto, they'll probably reconcile by the third book.

Yeah. Not as hard as you think.
Start doing studying and doing exercises in your daily commute and move on to reading interesting stuff as soon as you can tolerate the amount of lookups it takes to get through a page.
Don't you want to know that feel when you start reading a series using the translations as reference, and then get to the point where you overtake the translators no longer need their help?

Last episode was ok. A lot of rushed, and as a result, confusing sequences. Nidaime breaking down 100-0 real fast because his stuff got damaged was weird as hell, when earlier in the season he was fine after they were scattered everywhere. All in all, judging from what the novelfags have been posting, this season was more entertaining because of the source drama, and not as well executed.

Failed to be as fun as the manga, partly because it tried to make an overarching storyline where there wasn't one. I'm still annoyed how every part people said to be excited for would end up being cut, and when I read it myself there were entire stories they didn't adapt that would have given character arcs anyway. The pacing of the finale was downright tedious in places. Not even the original characters deserved that.

Kekkai Sensen as a manga I feel is strangely relevant here though, in that the characters do feel like a family of oddballs and idiots. It's also surreal slice of life with occasional action-drama and a lot of daft jokes, but admittedly Nightow's delivery isn't as relaxed or nuanced as tanuki antics. I think the anime's tone was too weighty and serious for how goofy and loud Nightow does things, but maybe they were trying to lean away from getting obnoxious.

It's way too late for me to make sense in words but the casts of both these series feel like old friends to me, and it takes something to hit that mark. They're definitely nothing alike though. Kekkai is a fun shitshow of short stories for the most part.

What's so hard to get about that scene? When Benten fell, she was frustrated because she wants to become a tengu but is still weak. When Nidaime cried, he was frustrated because he didn't want to become a tengu but his temper made him act like one, he couldn't help it.
>>
>>159010919
>water pebble
It's a dragon stone. It's magic and in the novel she uses water and ice against Nidaime but they didn't animate it.

I've visited Kyoto on and off for this past couple years. The show really captured the city perfectly. You'll be surprised on how accurate the show represents Kyoto if you ever visit the place. The scenery, environmental clutter, and the overall atmosphere are all recreated very well in the show. Remember those strange old shops and bars and hidden temples you saw in season one? Kyoto is filled with those interesting out of sight spots. You can pretty much walk the city alone late at night and never get bored just by paying attention to all the neat details when the crowd isn't around.
>>
>>158969721
The author of this book series also wrote The Tatami Galaxy and The Night is Short, Walk on Girl. They have a similar vibe to them but obviously their storylines are very different to Uchouten
