Just like most behaviours generally accepted as normal stem from some societal need in the past.

It's not entirely wrong, but it's a lot of hand waving and false equivalences. A more accurate statement would be that in terms of socializing, how you present yourself is the most important thing to getting along, because that's how you get people to like you or not.
