Why stupid? I thought having bants with his sister really added to the scene. It showed that they were comfortable around each other and loosened the atmosphere, just to thwack it all with geass involuntarily ruining everything. Moreover, he had his eyes fabulously closed in the first two examples of what it could do, giving a lot bigger margin for geass to kick in.

Its lazy writing. It works to achieve what it wanted (shock) and did the minimum work required with the foreshadowing (flickering) but at the end of the day it is cheap way to achieve a twist to the narrative.

Lazy writing is not necessarily shit. It is just that, lazy. It is something you can come up with in an hour, unpolished and underestimating the audience. I enjoyed CG plenty but that twist was awfully done.
