OP here, you're pretty much totally correct, but I want to add a bit to what you said by pointing out that I've had two girlfriends before, both of which actually were (the way I saw it) irrationally attracted to me because their self-esteem was even lower than mine, and they projected all these qualities onto me that I didn't think I really deserved. Eventually we broke up because of trust issues that centered on the relationships being long-distance (they really didn't trust me to not cheat on the unless I was living near them).
