Yasaburou is THE most unorthodox protagonist I have ever fucking seen in an anime. He has no notable agenda other than to make his immediate surroundings interesting. He's the kind of character that more often than not would show up occasionally and hint that he orchestrates the calamities going on around the protagonist, all for the sake of his own amusement. But he himself is the protagonist, doing all that, while being incredibly smart while also equally stupid.

Despite this his portrayal makes him highly relatable and genuine as a person, who balances his responsibilities and obligations to his family with his own personal mission to make his life as interesting as possible.

Well, yeah, if you're saying that a well thought out and written cliche ending is better than a terribly done half-assed unconventional ending, no shit. But that's not always the case and if someone can write a consistent story there's no reason they shouldn't be able to make the ending unconventional. Doesn't even have to be "edgy", it can just have some of the characters incredibly convenient luck in certain moments go the wrong way. Or, maybe not even that, just write a story about completely different characters with completely different behaviors. Have a story with no clear "villain" and "hero", have the protagonists be more than just vessels for cheap cut and paste morals and ideals. I do like Samidare a lot for that, the main character was more than that. There are a lot of things that can be done "unconventionally" that don't have to just be a black and white thing.
