His role as an MC is mainly to show off the rest of the cast while being able to keep up with them from behind and surprise them from time to time. People cry about his lack of brains and shit but at the end of the day, he's what most series would have as a side character that exists purely for exposition, only he's not a beta faggot that relies on the MC to carry his ass, because well he's the MC to begin with.

While the anime does have better character design in appeal, the overdone One Piece style that Hara does makes it much more easier to convey the insanity of it all. Just look at the latest chapter and Left Hand Smug. If he was animated he wouldn't look half as cool because he's just a giant ugly barrel with a helmet that practically looks like a faceless bald man from NTR doujins. But then when you slap him in the Kingdom manga it's far more fitting when everyone else is a barrel and their horses look like they are on drugs.

Then again I think between the trio of Ousen, Akou, and Makou, the 3 of them never even had different expressions unless you count Ousen tilting his eyes up when he was mirrored to Riboku. Ousen is always eyes wide open, Akou always has that damn frown on his face, and Makou with his shit eating grin. They truly are from Ouki's family, nobody ever fucking changes their face unless it's some serious shit.

I think Zheng Ying is just as much of a MC except we don't really see his shenanigans. Story-wise he's the more importunate one.
