The robots are only part of it, the amount of detail everywhere else in the film was simply staggering. It's a shame it ended up being so rushed due to the short runtime, give it an extra 20-30 minutes to flesh things out and it would be on the same level as Akira.

Nagano actually had nothing to do with the film other than providing the original designs. Characters were handled by Yuki Nobuteru (also the animation director) and mecha by Mika Akitaka.
