Pretty sure most people who start Ippo don't care much about boxing.

It's the characters and dynamics that make that series. Plus they still make boxing seem 10x more interesting than it is IRL.

I don't think Ping Pong had much comraderie, but then it wasn't a typical sports anime. The sports is simply a plot device and has very little relevance aside from its symbolic value - you rarely actually see any of what they do in the games.
