His endings used to have more effort with multiple coloured drawing CG's to match the text.

Recent game endings have basically been a single static black & white scribble with text, not even a few scribbles, just one.

If anything ZUN is a excellent writer and storyteller, it's practically the reason for Touhou fandom lasting this long that he writes some good side stories that flesh out the games.

While I agree about good side stories, 2hu fandom is self-sustaining and even prefers their own character interpretations to official ones. Also ZUN tends to focus on his latest characters, which usually aren't that popular, especially compared to ESOD cast.

ZUN design great characters but his own art doesn't give those designs justice, good thing shitloads of talented artists are draw to touhou for this reason.

Good thing ZUN is a game maker.
Fairy wars wasn't great because he hired an artist for the characters, it was great for the soundtrack and the game itself. The nice art is a great bonus, that's all.

The point is more that there is a constant flow of new material for the fandom to work with, ZUN has a ridiculous work output between all the manga/novels/music/games he writes.

EoSD popularity is the equivalent of Pokemon Genwunning, just because they're most popular during the highest point isn't necessarily a indicator of the fanbase, it changes overtime.

A look around and you'd see more recent ones like Sagume Kishin, Junko, Hata no Kokoro, Clownpiece, Usami Renko have been making strides as well.

Also don't forget Koishi who is the only character to have beaten Reimu at any point for popularity even if it was brief, she too is part of the modern 2hu crowd.
