I personally got into the HxH IP for the very first time mere couple months ago or so. I did some research, got conflicting opinions, so I tested both 99 and 11 versions by watching ep1 of both, back to back.

Didn't like the rushed pacing, blatant skips nor lazy modern ""animation"" aestethics of the 2011 version, so I started marathoning 1999 version first. And boy, am I fucking glad I did, as everything it adapts totally BTFO of the 2011's counterparts.

The ONLY thing 2011 has kinda "over" 1999 version is that it adapts a couple more arcs. In that sense, I'd suggest watching all of 1999 version, then starting 2011 version from episode 79, so you can continue the plot without breaks. Be warned though, as the 2011 version is still like watching Fox Kids adaptation, with super shitty pacing and lack of animations at times, poorly compensated with all-knowing narrator merely telling what's supposed to be going on.
