Where I come from it's weird not to call people by their first name, if you know it. I like that, I hate creating more artificial barriers between people.

What's weirder in Japan is that, at least from the anime I've seen, it's not uncommon to call your parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts by just their first name. Usually in other countries they'd call them uncle/aunt/grandfather/grandmother or at least add those words before their name (i.e. "Uncle John" or "Aunt Jane").
