Bait thread but I'm going to give you a serious answer: otaku culture has degenerated.

"Back in the day" the self insert fantasy was being a cool guy that could do some amazing thing that the viewer could never hope to do i their life, weather this is having some sort of superpower/gadget, being an amazing professional at an exciting job, or even just having an extremely eventful life. The protagonists were outlandish and traditionally masculine because it wouldn't make sense for them to have the lives they did otherwise.

But modern otaku don't have that fantasy. They've become so damaged that it's not "I wish my mundane life wasn't mundane" because they don't even have a mundane life, so now the self insert fantasy is a much lower bar and the protagonist is more of an everyman dork, if only visually if not in character, in order to better self-insert.

Harem series are the biggest example of this. The fantasy of being guys like tenchi was interacting with girls that had magic powers. The fantasy of being guys like keitaro was interacting with girls at all.

The anime on the right is better
