No series should run forever. Eventually the author starts running out of ideas and repeating themselves. And it's even worse in Japan because authors tend to be singular instead of in the west where at least you can get a new writer every couple of years to weigh in on a character. One of the reasons I drop Detective Conan is simply because it never ends. Knowing that you're series can have a resolution is more satisfying than getting one more chapter in my opinion.
