Not a problem at all, certain people really do have these food fixations and it does become a sticking point. If any of my friends were asked about a food I am always seen with, it would be chicken wings. They would all know it because I order them all the damn time. I can think of many people I know who have their associated food-- it's just not a "story" element, it is how people are.

Here is a really godawful trope:

Boy living on his own in a home with no parents.

While authors do this to make scenes easier and make the home a place where events can happen, it removes so much depth, dimension, fun, and tension from scenes. Having a girl alone in your room when your parents are home is infinitely more interesting than in an empty house. Trying to hide a sleepover is 100x better than just having one.

And then you lose out on the parental comments, family comedy/drama, and so much more. It's awful.

Does anyone know if this shit is even remotely common in Japan? Parents working overseas and leaving their teenage child(ren) home alone for months if not years at a time?
Obviously it has to be a real thing for it to have appeared and propogated itself in so many different stories, but I have a hard time believing it's more than just an extremely rare occurance.
Either way it's just awful, lazy writing to keep the home scenes and simple as possible and to let plenty of wacky hijinx happen in the home without parental intervention.

Sometimes it can be done well though, like Toradora for example, Taiga lives alone in a house-sized apartment, but she doesn't like the lonliness and despites her father for leaving her alone. Plus we don't even know this or see inside her home for most of the story, because she doesn't like to invite people over. Basically, it obviously wasn't done as a lazy writing technique, but actually had a purpose.

It's very common for both parents to work and neglect their child, if they have one to begin with. But completely working overseas isn't as common.

It's a classic that always gets posted in these kinds of threads, but I can't help but bring it up yet again.

Liking a specific food makes it easier to create a stronger image of the character into the viewers mind. Eating habits establish the character the same way their hair colour, clothing, their way of speaking do.
