Is it one of these cases where a director changes his style to copy other, more popular, works like that wannabe ghibli movie from Shinkai?

It's garbage. I really wanted to like it but there's just nothing remarkable about it. Story was very predictable and mediocre, there were some good scenes, but too much is revealed too quickly, removing any sense of wonder. The directing and dialouge was abhorrent. Animation and soundtrack are there only things worth mentioning.
