nope. the mangika gets his themes confused a bit and then gets lost in the plot for a bit. Its a great manga, but it really loses steam around the whole movie plot, and stumbled across the finish line. The movie boiled all the bullshit out of the story, and stuck tight to the main themes of the manga. As a result, the movie manages to make it's point better then the manga did.

Agreed. Yamada tried to cut out everything which made the redemption plot work, but failed due to cutting Shouya's new friend's characterization, showing the past catch up with him.
They also went for a romance route by including certain scenes, but didn't even include the epilogue in the manga.
Yamada did some nice sakuga with good direction here and there, but fundamentally as a story it failed as a romance and a redemption story. It had elements of both but was neither.
An example of this is the funeral, which didn't need to exist in the movie, but did and failed miserably at developing any character due to its length and content.
The bridge scene was also a huge climax in the manga, as big if not bigger than the balcony suicide, where Shouya's new life was destroyed by the past catching up with him.
It was terribly executed in the movie , and characters like Ueno seemed like the antagonist, while Kawai felt like a supporting character.
Where in the manga Kawai was a massive bitch and got put in her place during this scene, while Ueno helped Shouya by talking him into going to the bridge before it all happened. Both of these were cut and changed, making it feel lackluster.
The only good part was the childhood arc in the movie.
