What do you mean by substance? I have seen this criticism a lot of short animation generally and I think it is to do with expectations and approach. Say where a film like Only Yesterday is the visual equivalent to prose I would say something like The Red Turtle or many independent animations and shorts are the visual equivalent to poetry. They seem superficially shallow and without content but they aren't trying to draw you in with a solid defined plot, interesting characters or whatever like prose. They are making metaphoric swipes at vague fuzzy ideas to provoke emotional responses in the viewer like poetry and prompt thought.

By substance, I mean that it didn't have much going for it. It was literally just the family on the island. Nothing really amazing or novel about it, nothing too rememberable stuck out. Look at something like Belladonna of Sadness.

I guess I can see a connection, if you count the visuals only. They were pretty good.

Guess it didn't work for me, I couldn't find anything from the movie that provoked thought. It wasn't great for me, but wasn't terrible either. What about it did you like? I'm curious, maybe you'll change my mind.

I don't think there was anything particularly novel about it either and it was just about a family on an island.

But going deeper than that I feel like initially the film was about the indifference of nature and then it moved into a commentary on the human condition more generally whilst leaving the impression that the overall driving thematic force of the film was about trying to inspire a deep respect for nature and a sense of wonder towards it. Not necessarily in an environmentalist way but the kind of the feeling you might get when having an existential crisis staring at the stars and realise your own insignificance to some extent.

None of that is particularly novel or philosophically deep. But I think half of the pleasure at least in poetry is in the execution. The film if nothing else is extremely disciplined. There is something to be said for the fact that anyone who is human anywhere in the world could watch that and understand its message. There is a certain beauty in that in itself.
