There have been manga adaptations of the earlier stuff.

As far as this goes, it's a web adaptation of one of the more recent books. Supposedly, there are also talks of manga adaptations of "Heir of the Jedi" and "Lords of the Sith" in the works as well.

The manga took some liberties, in the book the first wavers don't like the second wavers either, but their prejudice is based on lifestyle and such.
First wavers are honorabru farmers and survivors while second wavers are greedy merchants

Eh, in the source material published by LucasArts and Disney like tech books about the Empire and its technology and military might I read claim that the Empire's navy is actually understaffed, which is a huge problem that rebels and insurgents manage to exploit.
The Empire has a too large navy with too few competent people, of which only some are even believers in the tents of the principles that the Empire is spreading (hence constant defections of imperial pilot squadrons joining rebel groups).
Still, despite constant uprisings and lots of traitors, successful acts of sabotage and attacks on imperial installations and such, the Empire still managed to stay the most powerful force in the Galaxy according to the movie Rogue One, with the Rebel Alliance feeling that they hadn't really accomplished anything till now, and then wanting to keel over and stop rebelling once the Empire's Death Star Project was turning into reality.
In the end, it was a war of attrition. The Empire could afford huge loses and was willing to sacrifice huge amount of soldiers and ships, as long as they had a leadership (Emperor Sidious, Sith Lord Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin and other people) enacting this kind of policy.
The death of the Emperor, Vader, Tarkin and other extremist military leaders probably lead to only pussies remaining, who weren't fans of the "throw enough of our men at them till the enemy's dead" approach.

Also, the rebels probably started turning Luke Skywalker into an even more impressive propaganda character than he already was.
He's the guy who totally killed the Emperor, and he dragged the battered body of that poor guy Vader around, teared off his mask so that he would die slowly. He can destroy death stars and a dozen AT-ATs, he's one of the best pilots in the galaxy, he has Jedi mind trick powers and can jump 2 billion miles and fart lightning and deflect everything you throw at him with his light saber, and he killed Jabba the Hutt.

One thing i'll give the EU (TO AN EXTENT) is the squabbling warlords thing. Since there wasnt really a singular powerful charismatic figure to lead the empire, and Palpatine had made everything bottleneck to him in regards to authority, you had a fractured empire with several different leaders squabbling for power.

Makes more sense to me than droids with a holographic face of the emporor giving final orders that the people would have no reason to follow. Why listen to a dead guy when you have two armadas who are loyal to YOU and your're pretty sure the Moffs a few sectors away would love to blanda up and control a large amount of the remaining government?

Then in turn the squabbling forced more people to join the rebellion, as well as the aforementioned propaganda, so the rebellion was able to become the new republic and be on equal footing with the remnants.

Who immediately gave up and fucked off to the unknown regions, while in the EU there was enough strength left for the galaxy to descend into warlordism for the next 20 years.
