Tohno Shiki, a young man who is able to see "lines of death" (formally known as the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception) after a childhood accident. Nasu's work was so detailed and internally consistent. People will question this consistency due to the introduction of exceptions to rules (especially prevalent in Fate onward), but in the past, there was always a solid, non-bullshit explanation - concepts, though occasionally convoluted, made sense. Even more so than that, his characters had a way of exceeding the limits of their basic descriptions. Kara no Kyoukai and Tsukihime read more like plays rather than the anime that most light and visual novels try to mimic. The characterization has effort put into such that the characters transcended their archetypes and became something more, something sympathetic. His characters had to evoke emotion because he didn't have the benefit of flashy visuals or huge art budgets before Fate. All he has wasTakeuchi (who clearly isn't always the best influence, but he is what he is).

Looking back on it, Nasu isn't and probably never was quite as good as Urobuchi or Meteo or Romeo, but he did his best. His world was interesting and had a sense of moderation and care put into it that was charming.

But I can't say that about Type-Moon or the Nasuverse anymore. I can't just blame Fate for it. The only thing I can fathom happening was that Nasu stopped caring. His work just doesn't have the passion it used to. Mahoyo was what truly made me lose hope, because it is so overly polished that it has no soul, and Aoko, Alice, Soujuurou, and even Touko are miserably boring characters compared to the charming ones I remember even within Fate/Stay Night. The powerlevels have gotten too out of control, losing the well-toned sense of restraint the Nasuverse once had.

And I've lost all hope of this stopping. Because it's popular, even though it's dumber than it's ever been.

Was the Near Side that bad? I'd even argue that Arc gets more interesting character development on Ciel's route than her own. Tsukhime is truly a story about optimism, valuing yourself, appreciating your life, and moving boldly into the future. Death might not be as close to our doors as it is to Shiki’s… but, then again, you never know. That is why the lessons in this story are so applicable. You are alive now, but maybe not tomorrow. So look on your past fondly, smile at yourself in the mirror now and again, and hope lovingly for the future. Shiki is someone who has about a decade or two of life left, and he messes around with two immortal beings in the main routes.

In the epilogue, Shiki fatefully meets Aoko again and they muse a little bit about old times past. Shiki notes how the past several days/weeks (the span of X route) have been crazy. And some point Aoko tells him that those days will eventually end. Shiki agrees and asks something to the effect of when. The Magus just kind of remains silent and freaking Shiki just tells her that the days were fun, though.

And this is what, for me, Tsukihime was about. Yes, there were vampires and serial killers. But it was really about finding joys in today – even when it doesn’t seem like there are any… and about having faith in a tomorrow. Basically, Tohno Shiki could die ten years from that conversation with Aoko, or he might not even wake up the next day. Although we don’t “live close to death”, the same basic concept applies. There are no promises in life. So you can go through life miserable only to be potentially snuffed out tomorrow, or you can find your own happiness and hope it extends into your future.

Unlimited Blade Works is my least favorite of the three routes and there are a multitude of reasons for this but first let's talk about the good stuff or rather the great stuff. Shirou/Archer's character exploration is fucking amazing and Caster is a good character even if her status as a mid boss is a waste for the former heroine. Now on to the bad, Rin and Shirou's romance for lack of a better word contradicts with the main theme of the route with the romance being about them compromising while the Archer fight and main theme is "follow your ideals to the end with no regrets". I feel like the slice of life here is the worst written of the 3 routes. Rin is also kind of trash and won't return to her Prolouge level greatness until Heaven's Feel comes around.

Fate/other night's Heaven's Feel character arcs are fucking fantastic and there's a very good if not excellent sense of darkness and tragedy throughout the route, even in the more peaceful days of said route. A lot of my favorite scenes are in this route and the Shirou/Kotomine climax is the best one in the game by far. It falls flat compared to Fate for two main reasons though, the first being that even if Shirou and Sakura are developed well as individual characters their romance could use a lot of work especially since its one of the main driving forces of the route. The other being that Matou Zouken is a really bad character and for someone with such a large presence in the route has less depth and subtly than even the villains of the Fate route, and no us being told that he's similar to Shirou at the last moment does not count as character depth.
