The entirety of Meakashi-hen was through the eyes of Shion. You hear all her thoughts as she slowly descends into madness. So yeah, I think it did a much much better job than the anime.
Her love for Satoshi was more a kind of clinging onto the one person who understood her at that age. She escapes her original school because since early age she had a rebellious heart against her own overbearing family, the Sonozakis. And when Satoshi disappears she's convinced they took him away. So she feels like she has a duty to find him, or if he's dead it's both her and her family's fault. And Satoko's for driving Satoshi into a corner. And when she starts to fall for K1 she begins to hate herself. Shion believed that Satoshi's dissapearance was ultimately her fault, that the Sonozakis got rid of him. And that she was betraying him by liking Keiichi.
It amplifies of course with the paranoia of the syndrome. And by the end she absolutely despises her own existence and can't stop fucking up.

I found the whole arc really sad and well done.
