Hisoka is absolutely lethal to anyone but the elites in this series, who are just so much stronger very few can even touch them. His ability is flexible, he is a strong tactician and he is willing to use almost any means to win.

This is a series where even powerful characters can die from a small weakness or a poor match-up of abilities. The spiders are not invincible and Hisoka is more than strong enough to pick them off in an ambush.

My favourite part of the relatively altruistic, good hearted Hisoka's story so far was when he slaughtered and publicly displayed the bodies of two people he pretended to be comrades with as a means to weaken and possibly provoke the one guy he has an obsession with fighting and killing

A close second would be when he showed his desire for two children to "ripen" and become stronger when they're older so he can feel greater satisfaction when he fights and kills them

Chrollo's the most twisted character of this series. He's completely alienated,the ultimate asperger sociopath. He was the one chosen to be the leader of the Troupe and didn't even decide himself, he just took the job as if it was his predestined goal and he didn't have anything else to do. He has no understanding of human feelings or desires and doesn't even know why he's doing evil as shown when he answered "Maybe it's the key to understand myself?". The same when he cries while reading the fortune, it's not real sadness, it's just that he felt like it was the right time to cry. His whole character quest is to gain humanity and emotions. he's like an empty shell, and I'm pretty sure Hisoka and Kurapika will be the ones giving him that humanity by killing all the people close to him. We'll see a cathartic Chrollo before his death that will make everyone sad despite him being terribly evil.

About showing/telling, it's not just nen exposition where it happens. But for example, Hisoka was using cards to slice since his first appearance. We don't need a whole explanation and name for the technique ("shu" IIRC.) Other series do the same thing (imbuing ki into objects) without saying anything.

That particular training was pointless mostly because it didn't really introduce anything new. The fights/results weren't necessarily pointless.
You could make the argument that those characters ended up accomplishing nothing either, but that's not really important.

HxH just reads like a diary more than anything. It's about things that happen to the characters. If the story points out that Kurapika's revenge is hollow, or that Gon is selfish, it doesn't change that fact. There's rarely another side to the story.

What makes something "not shallow"? I don't really feel like HxH is attempting to defend itself on that front. Characters like Wing and Biscuit exist because the plot required them, and that's fine with Togashi. Those characters don't have a stake in anything else going on, and the actual development only happens to a very small group

I dunno, I don't think it's worth the time digging into details for this. The best I can give is impressions. Though, I do feel like One Piece makes an effort to have its characters feel like they would still exist without the plot.

Here's something to consider: HxH is a long running series that takes breaks often. Most people here probably binged it in a short amount of time, so anything that's explained twice seems redundant. But HxH has been acquiring new fans since the 90's, and not all of those fans could always watch/read one iteration from the beginning in a weekend. Because of that some things need to be reiterated, the terminology and mechanics of nen alone are complex enough that it's beyond a new reader to infer everything correctly on their own. Shonen Jump is a manga for young boys, there's another one born every minute, it's worth while being accessible to new readers when your readers are new to the world.

This thinking really flies over a lot of people's head. Most notably during the exposition in the Hisoka vs Chrollo fight. The hyper consuming anons of /a/ didn't get why they were doing so much talking and explaining what was about to happen, forgetting entirely the manga hadn't had an issue in over a year and this was for the benefit of new readers or readers that needed a refresher.

As for economy of character, I can't agree or disagree. Who knows how long the manga will go on for? Saying someone like Wing is just a plot device can't be confirmed or denied when our view of HxH is still truncated. Bringing up Biscuit though makes little since since she's currently on the boat, so is Kurapika's teacher and a lot of other characters who might have otherwise been one offs.

And, just my two cents, "Show, don't tell" is the biggest meme phrase wannabe writers and critics need to neck themselves for using. There are no rules in art, least of all rules of thumb, and taking things to holistic extremes helps no one. It's underpinnings haven't stopped HxH from being a damn fine series with a great story.
