The wrapping itself is an old samurai tradition, inherited by the yakuza (for whatever reason). It's called 晒, pronounced "sarashi", but you won't find any real results in searches unless you specifically look for something like "晒 ヤクザ". Virtually nothing comes up about it in English, so it will be a waste for you to try to do much searching on it. You're just gonna find a bunch of nonsense about uncomfortable breast-binding. Fuck that shit.

Anyway, coming back from my drifting and tangents - the purpose of wrapping the waist like that is twofold: it was worn as an undergarment in samurai times (Japan is cold in the winter), and it was intended to prevent the intestines from spilling out should a samurai be cut down, across the waist. Both utility and ceremony.

No, it's something that you might wear anywhere, depending on who you are. Like I said, samurai would wear it under their regular, day-to-day clothes. If I'm to predict why Hanayama's wearing it, I would say that he's simply wearing it to show Musashi - who is, of course, familiar with the custom - that he is willing to fight to the death. He's made a preparation that nobody else in the era has yet.

You are talking about 2 different things.

Power lifter belts are meant to act as extra core muscles to prevent injury. They can enable you to lift heavier by taking the place of your core muscles if you're weak in that, but they don't give you a direct benefit if you already have adequate core for the lift, just a safety measure. This is why they're allowed in power lift competitions.

Power lifter suits do provide direct benefit on lifts because the elastic fabric stores energy on the negative part of the lift and releases it on the other part. They can increase lifts by a pretty big amount and they are not allowed in competitions.
