currently cleaning up some twitter omakes for Bijin Onna Joushi Takizawa-san but i need some advice on fonts

The author uses these really big bubbly style hand drawn letters and I was wondering what font I should try using for them.

these are the closest free fonts I could find that might fit that don't look completely terrible

http://www.fontspace.com/kimberly-geswein/janda-manatee
http://www.fontspace.com/xerographer-fonts/yumernub

Is there a better option out there?

here is a comparison for one of the omakes I cleaned just to show you what I'm working with

If you look through the archives, between February 6th and April 1st (don't ask why I have exact dates), someone shared a 2000 font zip in one of the scanlation threads. They organized it too, so you should be able to find a bubbly font easily.

oh I actually found about that just RECENTLY and it was a godsend. I actually searched for it because changing brush size gets so tedious if you have to redraw something.

speaking of size, you can change font size by decimals by holding alt and dragging the mouse here from left-right. normally find this useful in high dpi scans, where a tiny difference in font size is barbaric.

I can condone making shit up in small cases to fit tone/colloquial speech or maybe (big maybe) to make a bit of subtext clearer, but this example doesn't add anything, it's just changed seemingly for change's sake.
Similarly, he removed some of the stray lines in the art and at least in one place added a bead to the woman's necklace. Removing smudge marks is one thing, but I don't think it's the scanlator's place to edit the art (inb4 scanlating is already out of line to begin with).

So there's this manga that I've been following for a while now, back before I started learning japanese.
I checked recently for more chapters in english, but it turns out it's on hold due to "awaiting translation".

I'm no longer a beginner, but I definitely don't think I'm an intermediate yet. I'm at least at the point where I can recognize when I don't know something (if that makes sense).
Would it be a bad idea to give the group an offer to _try_ to translate a chapter? I wouldn't want to waste their time if it turns out to be too hard, you know?

What is the general opinion on shit like in the last panel here
Original sound was something like "Voriririrororo"
And it was a noise made by a giant snake like monster
In this situation would you
Put something that was close enough in like "roar"
Just sound out the japanese word "voriririrororo"
Or leave the japanese text and put in some sort of sfx note
>>
>>157631728
I'm a big fucking weeb and I like to know what the onomatopoeia's sound like so I just write it as a literal translation in a special SFX font unless it's important to the story or something

"Roar" doesn't capture the sense of the original sound or what I would expect a giant snake monster to sound like.
I would probably keep the romanized japanese sound, but if I were to try to translate it, I would probably pull some Brian Jacques type of bullshit like "screekaakekaa". I feel silly typing that out, but sfx in English tend to sound silly anyway.

makes sense
I felt a little weird about doing that
For the rest of my chapters of MiA I'm trying to do it like this where applicable

Roughly how many kanji do you know?
I'm not suggesting that kanji memorization is the end-all-be-all of the language, but it's probably the best benchmark you can give us off the cuff.

I'm surprised people aren't jumping all over this series
Biggest disappointment of the anime for me was that they didn't get to Iruru
I couple months of nip and about 1k kanji is barely enough for me to struggle through shit like new game and yotsuba
I'd like to help translate but all I can do is typeset

Maybe whoever's working on chichichichi would be willing once they catch up on that since there's only 2 volumes according to mangaupdates

usually maybe means "It will never fucking happen"
>>
>>157633242
I posted in the thread for chichichichi just now but I think he might be gone for today
I have no idea where to find translators for things
I tried asking on mangaupdates once
I got 0 responses because people there only care about translating shoujoshit and fujoshit
>>
>>157633242
Then maybe you should work on building up a skillset beyond typesetting.
"I can typeset" or "I can proofread" is like saying "I have tons of great ideas for novels/video games"

>fujoshit

Literally ruining the anime and manga industry
>>
>>157626589
Dammit!!! Now i have to redraw like 15 pages
>>
>>157631728
When I translate I tend to leave SFX untranslated unless there's a specific narrative importance that can't be realized from context. Looking at >>157631728 it's obvious that the sounds are the stone door rumbling and scraping as it closes, even without the awful combination of both literal and localized SFX. Anybody who has ever seen a movie or played a game with a stone dungeon or tomb already knows what that sounds like. At least they didn't remove the original and put in western comic book style text, which is the absolute worst.

For the example you gave, I would translate the roar in the last panel, since it does have significance as a surprise to both the character and the reader. I wouldn't actually use "roar" though, because when I read that all I can think of is a creature literally saying it. Something closer to the original would be better as long as it captures the more rapid undulation of the initial sound and the more elongated at the end. The next page, presumably, is going to reveal the source of the noise, so it isn't vital for the reader to instantly recognize it as a roar specifically. They just need to know that it's a loud, unexpected sound from some kind of animated thing.

>typesetters are as useless as idea guys
>>
>>157633744
Implying typesetters aren't incredibly expendable. Everybody and their moms thinks they can do it.
>>
>>157633963
but having typesetters in important because it keeps the workload split up so translators can focus on translating and cleaners can focus on cleaning etc

it's called division of labor

Do you wanna help me open a restaurant?
I can't cook or manage a business, but I can wait tables.
>>
>>157634318
ok, try running a busy restaurant with only cooks and managers and no waiters
>>
>>157634373
The question is not whether a restaurant needs waitstaff or whether a manga needs typesetting.
Like the other guy said, typesetters are a dime a dozen, so offering your service as one isn't much help, since you're still asking someone else to handle the brunt of the time and skill.

>>
>>157634546

FUCK
>>
>>157634526
as someone who can only typeset I agree with this
You need to have some other skill worth using or else you can be replaced by just about anyone
>>
>>157629386
Welcome to scanlation in general. Worse is when you finish uploading the rar/torrent and then it gets pointed out even though you checked it yourself at least 5 times.
>>
>>157630518
I can only find raws for volumes 1 and 2 (current scanlation is at volume 3), so I can't do that. I would actually have to ask them for the scans of the chapter.
I did however go and read through the very first chapter, and got through like 60% of it without looking at the actual translation. I'm going to read through a few more chapters to see if I can improve that percentage before making a decision (and even then, I could always do a majority of it, then ask the hundred places on the internet for help on two or three sentences).

>>157631973
I mean, if it's easy enough, why can't I? (don't use the above as a rebuttal)
Besides, I wouldn't lie to the group and give them a script I'm unsure about. There wouldn't be a point in doing that.
>Advanced beginner
Is that not a thing?

>>157632192
I can't get that kanji grid thing to work, so I couldn't tell you. I've got ~550 anki cards right now, but there's definitely some repeats of common kanji in there.
I was focusing more on grammar study before, which is why the amount is so low. Who wants to become a walking dictionary anyway?
Just kidding, I'm starting to add more cards gradually.
>>
>>157636325
>550
definitely not enough
In the djt guide they say 2k is a target number just to start reading with any sort of decent comprehension
just find some nice easy raw manga to read and mine more kanji from and be content with typesetting for now
>>
>>157636473
But dictionaries exist. Why would I have to memorize 2000 words when I can just look them up?
>>
>>157636567
Because you haven't seen them in context enough to understand how to translate them properly.
>>
>>157636473
What exactly is mining in this context?
>>
>>157636567
So you're not a faggot with a crutch. Don't purposely limit yourself.
>>
>>157636325
>~550 anki cards right now, but there's definitely some repeats of common kanji in there.
So those aren't individual kanji, but your total vocabulary?

It's way too early for you to translate anything.
>>
>>157636656

>>
>>157636719
Fuck, I mean >>157636609 's point.
>>
>>157636567
2k is a minimum for even halfway decent comprehension
most people know way more than that
read through the djt guide again
iirc it says you maybe shouldn't even try reading without knowing 2k
And when it comes to dictionaries
Every time you come across a word you don't know you should be putting it in to a mining deck
If you don't know about that you really should just go to djt
>>
>>157636719
>>157636736
Not a joke it's a totally different person asking. I've thought about trying to learn japanese for a while and was curious to know what the terms like mining, and anki cards have to do with it.
>>
>>157636803
my advice to that guy applies to you as well then
go check out djt in /jp/
read the guide
anki is a flashcard program
mining is reading manga and things to find new words and then put those words and definitions into anki
>>
>>157636803
The phrase isn't unique or specific to DJT, though. Where do you think terms like "data mining" come from? Metaphorically speaking, you dig through a mine(raw manga/LN/etc.) looking for buried ore(unknown kanji) which you then refine(learn) into precious metal(comprehension).
>>
Can anyone think of a way to clean these scans without destroying too much detail and not going crazy with the dodging and burning. I have 1000+ pages of this to do, and doing manually will be painful. Down scaling isn't an option either. 4000px is what I want it at, because I have a 4k monitor.
